Hello everyone,

I met a very sweet young lady the day of surgery at the hospital who was having the same surgery as me same day so we have kept in touch. Well she sniffs cocaine occasionally and is ready to start back we are a week out. What affects would that have on her new pouch. Would that cause problems for her. I’ve been Basically her support system and told her about this group and told her she should join to talk with more people in her situation but i wanna know what will happen if she does cocaine this early. Yes I told her she should seek help to stop which she is but she said shes young very healthy and only do it every now and then so she dont see herself being a addict because she can stop when she wants but shes not ready.

Not an expert, but the "I can stop whenever I want to...just not now" thing is a pretty classic addict line. Addicts, especially young ones, rarely consider themselves to be addicts. Her coke habit may not seem like a problem now, but these things have a nasty habit of spiraling. If I was in your position, I would advise her to be honest with her doctor about her cocaine use. At the very least her doctor can explain what the impacts would be on her post-OP stomach.

Coke is a highly additive drug, and then there is the complication of transfer of an addiction. Some people after weight loss surgery transfer a food addiction to alcohol or drugs.

As above, hopefully at the very least she can be encouraged to be discuss with her doctor.

Why did I think think this post was going to be about the soda😀 I was ready to say that I had not had one in over a year and at certain times I want one really bad. But I see this is something way more serious. Unfortunately, people can only change when they want to. I am not sure the damage they will done with her having this serious addiction but there is only so much you can do. If you have offered advise and expressed your concerns it may be time to step back. I wish both of you the best.

She is not "healthy" if needed WLS. Obesity is major health problem. She sounds like typical minimizer. I am healthy and I am not addicted. Cocaine can cause death if electrolytes get out of whack, especially potassium. Messing with cocaine immediately following WLS is huge danger if not able to stay hydrated. In particular, heart rhythm problems.

I'm curious about how she even got passed for surgery in the first place. My surgeons office required you to pass a psche eval and drug testing for six months. I take Valium per prescription so I always had benzodiapines in my system, but at low levels since I only take them when I have flare ups of my back injury. If they detect anything you're not supposed to be taking you have to 1. start all over and 2. seek help to stop your habit and thus it'll take longer to get approved. If you even do. The surgeons office failed in that as if she picks the cocaine habit back up it may very well kill her.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
