I’m on soft phase. What are your favorite cereals ?

I did not eat any concentrated grain carbs until maintenance. No Cereal for 7 months, and then very cautiously. Now I cook up whole grains (steel cut oats, quinoa, teff, amaranth, buckwheat, and millet.). I add some slivered almonds, raisins and dried gogi berries, and also some cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger. 1/2 cup of this cooked cereal, with a TB of ground flaxseed , along with 1/2 cup of soy milk gives me plenty of Protein and is filling enough to last until lunch. It also starts my day with a good boost of anti-oxidants.

NO way do not even try it = Carbs heavy and processed food! Plus the Dairy is going to wreck you! I would eat a little oatmeal healthy steel oats but a box of frosty flakes NO way

grains can be pretty rough on a healing stomach. Something like Cream of Wheat would be OK on it - unless your clinic wants you following an ultra-low carb diet (in which case, any cereal is going to have too many carbs)

I ate muesli (with bits of fruit and nut) from 4 weeks out and I've never had a problem.

be careful what you choose. just because we can have it doesnt mean we should.. high carb whether be in cereal or anything else is a huge derailment.

You could do oatmeal or cream of wheat... but they overfill me way too fast! I say don't do any cereals! Eating Protein first should be your goal anyway.

It all depends on what your surgical/dietary team told you to do. Medical opinions differ considerably. Some doctors tell you to eat Protein and very little else...my team told me to eat a healthy balanced diet. There's more than one way to make the surgery work.

My team suggests cheerios soaked in skim milk during the soft phase, then they say to drink the milk afterwards as you would other fluids.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
