Pre-OP diet ugh!

Recommended Posts

My surgery is Thursday the 27th. I have been doing the 2 week pre-op diet. It is soooo hard. I have had Protein Shakes, daily, Jello, cottage cheese ect. that is called for. Last week when I started I make this chicken santa fe Soup all the time for my family( a family favorite)that consist of chicken breast, black Beans, onion, taco seasoning, chicken broth and Tomato juice! Since my diet consist of up to 2 cups of tomato juice daily and unlimited chicken broth I would eat the broth part of the soup that was more flavorful than just having tomato juice or chicken broth by itself. I have a very active job sometimes walking anywhere from 6-10 thousand steps a day, so this restriction has been hard. I have had 3 Premier Protein shakes a day, the soup broth, and 2 cups of cottage cheese a day mixed with jello and cheated with a little sugar free cool whip on top. Today I have felt very weak and very tired and instead of having 3 shakes I had 2 but I ate a little bit of deli ham. No bread or anything just maybe a couple of ounces. I felt like I just had to have something I was starving. I really hope I haven't sabotaged my surgery. I have also been in the bathroom a lot today to the point there is just Water coming out today. I don't know what to think. I feel like I have already had the magnesium citrate and that is not until Wednesday? IDK what to think?

The preop diet can be rough but you're in the home stretch now!!! Congratulations in advance. You've been (mostly) diligent and it will pay off ❤

One mistake will not mess you up, but try not to make it a habit. Almost everyone messes up at least once, and it's not an end all. And of course it's gonna be watery- you're not putting in a lot of mass food-wise. You'll have some pieces and parts (tmi, I know), but it's mostly gonna be Water for a while. Same thing will happen right after surgery until you're eating solids again, in which case, stool softener is your BEST FRIEND.

Pre-op diet is legitimately the hardest part. You're almost done with it- you can get through it. You just gotta hang in there.

Once you're done with your surgery and on your way to healing, you'll see how strong you were to keep going and that the hard part is over. ❤️ Congratulations and good luck!

stick to your program (and be glad you can eat cottage cheese - I would have killed for anything like that!! Mine was just liquid and sugar free Jello!). It's tough, a lot of us have been through it and can vouch for that. You just have to white knuckle and keep in mind it'll all be over soon.

re: bathroom - I'm guessing it's because you're not taking in solid food or Fiber

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
