Allergy to Surgical Adhesive

Recommended Posts

Anyone else have this problem?

I had my vsg done on 1/6 and had no problem with the surgical tape they used, but I had my gallbladder out on 2/7 and for whatever reason, all five of my incisions are red and inflamed and itchy. I went to the doctor today and got a steroid shot (my surgeon approved of it) to help, but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this? Any idea how long the itching will last? I took the tape off them, so just waiting for the rash to die down. Boo. :(

Also, there is no infection or anything, just the allergy. Thank goodness.

I had that issue with my second plastic surgery procedure. I was also put on steroids (pills for me, not shot), and after about a week, the surgeon removed the tape. It cleared up pretty quickly - maybe within a couple of days (it's been awhile - I can't remember exactly)

I'm allergic to the adhesive and glue they use too. It's a pain in the ass lol

Hopefully I don't have anymore surgeries anytime soon, but I'll have to try to remember to ask for that when I go in next time... It's just so strange that I didn't have a reaction the first time, but did so badly the second.

Thank you all so much. It makes me feel better that I'm not alone in this.

it took three surgeries before I had that reaction. My veterinarian said that isn't unusual - it sometimes takes a couple of times before your body develops a sensitivity to it (she said her daughter had three C-sections and only developed an allergy/sensitivity the third time around)

That’s normal, your body doesn’t usually react to something the first time it encounters something as it doesn’t know it doesn’t like it. Allergies develop after the first exposure and sometimes it takes multiple exposures.

Good to know. That sucks, but at least I found out for a laparoscopic surgery instead of something open!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
