Random questions for those who have had bypass

Recommended Posts

So my date is coming up in a week, and I just had some random questions for those who have already had bypass. Or those who may know the answer!

1. Did you have a JP drain with your procedure?

2. Did they Cath you?

3. How did you take large meds post-op? Or meds by mouth at all? Were you able to swallow ok?

Thanks in advance! ❤️

No drain or cath. Easy surgery for me. I was home the next day. I am allowed to take small pills but need to break up small ones.

No JP drain, no catheter. My meds were in liquid form. I take calcium citrate in a capsule form - not a big tablet.

No drains or catheter here either. I had to crush all my meds into a powder for the first couple of months, and they were absolutely disgusting. I tried to disguise them multiple ways and they still made me gag.

no drains. No cath. I was told I could take anything that was the size of a pencil eraser or smaller as soon as I got home from the hospital, which for me was everything except those giant Calcium tablets and ursodiol. I probably could have cut the calcium tabs in half and swallowed them, but I just took it in powder or chewable form. I had to wait about three weeks before I could swallow the ursodiol.

No drains or catheter. My surgeon actually had me swallowing pills (even my fairly large multi-vitamins) on day 3 (first full day home). I was shocked and asked multiple times if they were sure but it went fine.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
