Hard to take a deep breath

Recommended Posts

I'm six day post surgery and still bloated feeling and I find it's hard to take a deep breath. Has anybody else had this problem? Any advice on how to fix it or does it just have to fix itself in time?

It will resolve with time. I actually started to have trouble breathing at 2 weeks post op and after an afternoon in the ER and a blood clot scare I was diagnosed with Pleurisy. So keep an eye on it, but as your swelling and gas goes down it should resolve Congratulations!

Thanks. I know I worry about any little thing but I just wanted other's opinions. I know it's soon but I was just wondering. I would feel good if it wasn't for this bloated feeling.

It just resolves itself in time. Hang in there.

Did they send you home with an incentive spirometer? The thing that you blow in? Using that a couple times an hour should help to clear your lungs and get things moving to make it easier to breathe, but I would definitely make a call to your surgeon to make sure everything is ok

Yes, I have a spirometer and I use it. I figured it would have to resolve itself but I figured I would ask anyways.

I did, too, but they made me do deep breaths and cough while pressing a pillow into my stomach 4-5 times a day for about two weeks.

Those muscles have been cut and they're trying to repair, so of course it's gonna suck a bit trying to do anything that involves using them, which unfortunately includes breathing sometimes. Hope you feel better soon.

I did! It took a few weeks to stop.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
