Liquid diet struggles

Recommended Posts

Just got the call from anesthesia today, so it's really, really happening. 😬 I'm struggling with this liquid diet though (and it's only been like 5 days). I'm craving savory, but regular Soup is just not cutting it. Is there anything I can have that you guys recommend?

Need to switch it up! 💃

I am not sure what your dietitian recommended during your liquid diet phase. (Ours gave us a menu).

Mine is 10 days, first 7 is liquids, such as Protein Shakes, broth, Water, Jello, yogurt smoothies, and they even mentioned creamed Soup, just make sure its no fat/no sugar and to strain out any chunks it may have. ((But then 3 days before surgery its clear liquid only, water/broth ))

Each Dietitian/doctor is different. A friend of mine is on Clear Liquids only, for 7 days. :(

I hope to see some good answers lol. Even though I have surgery date I kinda dread the 14 day liquid diet. My sister had her surgery in Chicago and only had a lean diet. Musta been nice lol

Yeah, I'm allowed to have Soups (including creamed), Jello, smoothies, yogurt, etc. But there are so few options that are savory. And yes, I have to strain out chunks too. It's for a full 14 days. Last night before surgery it's two clear Protein Drinks (that I hear taste awful). Just thought maybe someone had an idea that's better than mine lol.

Me too! The first couple days are hard and you will literally just want to eat anything and everything. I think it gets easier, but if you're someone who likes variety and can't eat the same thing everyday, I'm sure it will be a little hard. Thats my problem. I'm still excited to do this though! Trying to discipline myself.

the liquid diet is the hardest part of this whole process. Most of us have been there (most - but not all - there are some surgeons who don't require it). You just have to white knuckle it and remember that it'll soon be over..

I take the Bone Broth and doctorate up a bit.I simmer it in my instant pot with onion, parsley, celery, and some spices as well as at a little salt. It makes it much more palatable. Taste more like an actual Soup broth been the bland stuff that comes out of the carton. And the bone broth gives you more Protein than regular chicken or beef broth.

I can totally do the same thing everyday as long as it tastes like something! I'm really excited to get to the point that you are.

Don't feel bad. I'm to do a 14 day liquid diet as well. It's to shrink the liver.

Started mine (14 day) today! Ugh! Makes you start thinking about life afterwards and how you will never eat this, or that again! Just got to think about how I am going to feel afterwards as smaller and healthier! It really will be a new way of life. I know for me almost everything you do and Celebrate is with food and drink.

I start my pre-surgery diet in just over a week (one day before my 50th birthday). Blossom requires Protein Shakes for Breakfast and lunch and a lean meat for dinner. My biggest fear is how to survive on that few calories for two weeks. First, I don’t sleep if my stomach is growling. Second, my blood sugar is going to tank which makes driving unsafe bc it makes me want to fall asleep at the wheel (I have reactive hypoglycemia). How on earth do people deal with these types of issues on so few calories?! If I could subsist on 600 calories a day I’d have been doing it a long time ago. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ So I’m more worried about the peripherals then anything. Forging ahead no matter what but a bit concerned about the pre-diet.

Sooo true! My families first thought when celebrating is grabbing a bite to eat. My sister struggled with this at first, she said not being able to physically eat what she wanted was trippy & probably the hardest part for her. Good luck with the 14 days!

I just posted on this. First 2 days, Thursday and yesterday (Valentines Day) was a wash. Today is better except for 3 slices of sandwich ham. I feel like I’m starving but pushing through. You can do it. I’ve read many posts where people have cheated and still had surgery. Not that I’m saying that you will but it happens.

That's one of my bigger fears. I enjoy food, immensely. But I'm afraid of not being able to go out with family bad friends to a restaurant anymore because all I will be able to do is sip on Water. 😭 I know eventually you can eat, but I hear it takes a good while to have an actual appetite. I know I need to do this though, but it's going to be a huge commitment.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
