Weight Fluctuations

Recommended Posts

I had RNY July 2019 and I'm down about 130 lbs total from pre-surgey 311 lbs to current weight of 182 lbs.

In the last week I've gained 4 lbs (178 to 182). I'm trying to catch my mistake now to prevent the scale from going up any further.

Im watching my portions, counting calories and carbs, and drinking most of my Water. Im not doing anything different than I was doing when I was losing. I can accept a stall, but I'm terrified of regaining just 7 months out. I had hernia repair surgery on 12/31/19, so I'm still unable to exercise for another few weeks. I managed to lose about 10 lbs during January after surgery without exercise. February has been a rough start for me though.

Have any of you experienced a gain like this throughout your journey? I've stalled in the past, and I have even gained a lb or 2, but gaining 4 lbs is scaring the hell out of me.

Overall, I know I've been successful, but being obese my whole life makes me not trust myself when it comes to health and nutrition. Please give me words of advice to get me through this. I feel so confused reading the threads sometimes... eat more, eat less, watch carbs, carbs don't matter... I just don't know what to believe.

First, congratulations on your success so far. That's amazing in 7 months!

Others may disagree, but by 7 months out I was no longer weighing myself daily and was doing it only weekly. As long as you are following the program, which you say you are, you shouldn't worry about minor fluctuations. They can occur for a variety of reasons and don't mean anything in the long run--nor do stalls. Just keep doing what you need to do and you will be fine!

So, you think 4 lbs is still a normal fluctuation? I had always told myself that anything more than 3 lbs would be a red flag for me. Thank you!

if you're still following your program, that wouldn't be a true gain. Could just be Water retention. Did you eat a lot of sodium yesterday?

*Sometimes* the physical stress a surgery can have on the body *may* cause an artificial loss or gain as you heal.

Your body *may* have finally bounced back and found equilibrium, especially if there is no change in food type, intake or activity.

If it continues to increase instead of stay the same or decrease check in with your Team.

Good Luck 🌈

Anything within 5 pounds is a normal fluctuation.

Stressors like surgery or other procedures can cause fluctuations. Be mindful of any foods that might cause inflammation or Fluid retention (food sensitivities or even mild food allergies)

I tend to weigh each morning. One thing that can cause fluctuations is if you don’t stay regular. Foods that cause bloat. But a one time gain of 4lbs does happen to many people and did happen when I had a colonoscopy. I think I stress even when it’s a small uptick. It’s just natural to worry about falling backwards.

but you are doing amazing, so try not to worry too much. It’s likely a temporary blip on the radar that will pass.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
