March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!

Hey Slimmy-mommeee!!! Glad to hear you're on the upswing! Personally for me, my incisions are getting itchy! Still the right side is most sensitive but definitely improving. [emoji4]
Thanks Rearguard! [emoji4] That's awesome it means they are healing! Each day should be getting better. Are they achy at all? I know the incision where they took my extra stomach out of is still sensitive.

Slimmy-mommeee I had terrible contractions and spasms at the top of my new stomach the first few days after surgery. I would sip, drink and I would feel it hit the top of my sleeve—it would bubble and then it ached and pulsed; it contracted I guess that is what it was for a few seconds. It was crazy! I only get that feeling now like 3’times a day instead of after every sip! Thank Goodness so happy to hear you’re recovery is getting better! I’m also at my follow up appt right now!
Thank you for all your positivity and encouragement! It means the world . My appointment went good. I got clearer direction on my Fluid intake and realized I may be causing some of the cramping by over indulging...smh. Let us know how your Appt goes.

Yes they are somewhat achy, I can sleep on my left side but my right side.....NOOOOOO way, at least not yet. Right now the spots are more itchy than anything and I don't have a post-op appointment until 3 weeks after surgery. Coughing and sneezing hurt like hell even with a pillow on my tummy to support it. I walk everyday to help heal faster.

My follow up went well. I get to start full liquids this week. I’m anxious though. Anything other than broth, Water and Protein Shakes is making me nauseous. I’ve tried milk—nope, lactose intolerant now but not prior. I’ve tried juice zero sugar added diluted with water and nausea then. I went and got some fair life milk today fat free and will try that later today. I even got some Calcium with d3 and that too made me nauseous. I was so looking forward to yogurt next week, now not so much.

I hope things go better for you! I’m in pre-op doing liquids. I’ve had diarrhea for 3 days! Can’t wait for next week! It’ll be my gold at the end of the rainbow ( March 17)!

I have my gastric sleeve on March 16th. I've been doing the 2 Protein Shakes a day w 1 meal at night... Protein and veggies. I had problems getting my shakes down for 2 days, I changed the flavor so now I'm good. I'm super excited about the surgery. Thankfully I have a great support system. I have already packed my bag for the big day. The last thing I have to pack is my cpap machine. I have to admit, I have had a hard time sleeping at night, may just be because the day is getting closer. I have been researching gyms to go to after the surgery. I plan on going to the gym and doing physical therapy as well. In any case, I wish all of you good luck, lots of good vibes and a safe and speedy recovery :)

Just started my liquid diet today. UGHS. 740 calories. 3 shakes, a cup of Bone Broth, and sugar-free flavored water. Working with SPED students is going to be a challenge for the next 2 weeks. And I have after school meetings, training, and appointments. If nothing else, time should speed by super fast!

@jlow347 Have you tried adding flavorless, non-thickening Fiber powder to your fluids? Metamucil makes a good one. Check in with your NUT but since my diet is strictly milk/liquids I'm allowed to do that.

I had mine today. Still in hospital but everything is going great so far! No problem with getting Water, broth or Jello down, and not in much pain at all. Tomorrow I switch full liquids so we’ll see how that goes. So far everything has been so easy I’m kind of wondering what’s wrong. Like...did they not actually do the surgery?????

Good morning! I had my surgery on Tuesday morning. Was discharged yesterday and back home now. Everything with the surgery went well. But, I have a few issues. First, I was unable to get any type of liquid down (esp cold) without severe stomach spasms. Jello was the worst!! Thought I was going to throw up for real. Second, I have an intense pain in my side now. Idk what is causing it but when I sit or stand it’s terrible. I’m praying it gets better. If not, I’ll have to speak with my surgeon at my post op visit next Thursday. How did yours go?

@NewEnglanderGal I had sleeve surgery on March 3rd. I’ve had ups and downs, of course. My new stomach doesn’t like lactose. I’m having a bit of weakness in the morning and afternoon. I haven’t had hardly any pain except for this very acute pain in my left shoulder at night when I’m laying down. I go back to work next Tuesday.

For tips, get prepared for the gas pain—just as I suggested for Wellness Warrior- I wish I had know about Charco Caps prior to surgery. They are activated charcoal capsules and that is the only thing other than walking that provided me any relief. I didn’t get them until the end of the second day, but I was outpatient so if you’re in the hospital they may be able to do more as I was on my own.

For me, getting in all the liquids improved day after day so I wish you all best of luck in staying hydrated.

@WellnessWarrior I had the most horrific gas pains after surgery. My surgery was outpatient and I spent the rest of that day screaming and crying from the gas pain. I walked as much as possible, but had hardly any relief! I’ve had other major surgeries and I’ve never experienced anything like it. I had pains like you’re describing and then my friend who had the surgery suggested activated charcoal capsules for the gas pain and bloating. They were a life saver! They are called Charco Caps and my mom got them at Walmart.

@jlow347 the pre-op diet was the hardest part for me other than the gas pains after surgery. You’re gonna do great and it’s so exciting how we’re changing our lives!!

@GAjeepGirl praying for your recovery!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
