Had Surgery gastric on Thursday March 5th. 1 week gastric sleeve post-op today 😊. My doctor has his post op patients on Clear Liquids for 3 days and full liquids x 1 month. I am doing ok process full liquids; but do miss chewing. I have been very tired, really no energy since surgery. Has anyone else experienced this, is this normal? Is gas still common? Thank you in advance for any comments...

Hi gcampbell29, I had gastric sleeve on March 2, so I'm a couple of days ahead of you.....I've been on full liquids since the surgery and it will last for 3 weeks, after my post op appointment I should go to soft foods. Tired and lack of energy is normal while your body is adjusting. You should start feeling better very soon, have you been up walking? If you can walk outside that would be even better especially if you have nice weather. I burp if I drink too quickly. I too miss chewing and its definitely more difficult when others are eating around you with all the good aromas, but we're on the upside of the surgery! Keep at it, you're doing fine!

How are you feeling? I'm going crazy waiting for next week, I want to chew. That cookie is a slider food, but you know that already. I'm not here to police anyone, just to share and provide encouragement with my peers. My advice is to get back on track, you've had a cheat/treat, remember your why, don't create any damage to your new stomach and you have support during this journey. It's hard, this is mental...I want a darn waffle, a piece of Turkey bacon and some darn cashews right now, lol! Instead I'm sipping on a vanilla Premier Protein shake mixed with plain black tea, it is very tasty. Going down easy as well. Nice rainy day in Southern California

Hi everyone! I had surgery March 3 and everything is going well.

Pain: I found the gas pains in my back pretty awful immediately after surgery but now I feel no pain at all. I have to inject myself with blood thinners for a few more weeks that gives me bruises. Incisions are mostly fine too. Only feels like I’ve been stabbed quickly if I bend in the wrong place.

Food: I was put on mushy purée the day after surgery. I am finding sweet foods a bit too sweet. My Nutritionist didn’t want me taking Protein Shakes but honestly it’s the only thing I can get down in a good amount and since it’s common practice everywhere else I’m ok with it. My calories have ranged between 400-800 a day. I use MFP. I’m not really counting calories though. Mostly eating salmon and cottage cheese mushed up and yoghurt.

Drink: I can easily down a water bottle in an hour, especially if walking. This made me panic that I’d ruined my sleeve but turns out Water just goes straight through so I calmed down.

Stopping: I am a bit worried that I don’t get nausea or sneezing or anything. I know when I’ve eaten a spoonful too much because I feel like the food is queuing down my throat but there’s not really any pain or sickness. I’m going to start weighing my food as I really want this tool to work!

Exercise: I walked a half marathon five days after the operation. Was totally fine. Am doing 10000 steps a day first thing in the morning from 530-7. Ughhhh. But gotta start living like I believe in me!

Weightloss: down 6kg since surgery. I think that’s about 13 pounds or so.

Hope this is helpful andinteresting xx

I had surgery yesterday, the 12th. Yeah, that gas is pretty miserable. I could kiss my tube of homeopathic carbo veg! I started taking that immediately and every time I walked I had my sister pound my back. Between those two things we got rid of the gas pretty quickly (relatively speaking). The doctor said 24hrs and I think we had it gone in about 14hrs. So I can’t complain. Drinking plenty of Water but very small amounts at a time. I’m actually hungry. 😩 Beyond that, I get on a plane tomorrow so hoping to rest up today and be able to walk through the airport.

Hello everyone. Had my surgery on March 9th with few issues. No pain just gas and nausea. Sipping my fluids and trying to eat my Jello.
Worst part is I keep waking up in the middle of the night with nausea.

The nausea may be a bit of acid reflux, are you sleeping on a bit of incline/sitting up a little? It may help. Are you on any acid reducers for a short period of time?

@hop_scotch. I have been taking meds for the indigestion but not sleeping with my head elevated. I’ll try that. Thanks.

Hello...Had surgery Wednesday morning! It’s behind me now, WooHoo! As soon as they got me to my room they had me up walking. I went out to walk, every time I got up to use the bathroom (and then some). I believe the very frequent walks can be attributed to very little gas pain-nearly nonexistent. It made me a believer so I kept it up.

Where I ran into trouble😏was we believe I drank too large of Water swallows, forgetting the small sip rule, and was first class sick, dry heaving, extreme nausea😖. Couldn’t keep a bite of Jello down-felt like it was stuck in my throat. They decided to keep me 2 nights.

This morning I was able to sip chicken broth and only a few bites of jello.

This Baripals forum has helped me enormously and I thank, honor and support each of you.! For those who have yet to do this, believe them when they tell you to walk, walk, walk and very slow sipping is KEY. Thank you Baripals for participating in this amazing group!💝🌟🙏

Hi Everyone - March 3rd sleeve here. Turns out I am allergic to the incision glue and for three days I have been itching and burning like crazy! Taking benedryl and 1% hydrocortisone. Good news is I transitioned to smooth textures today. Ate 1/4 c egg whites for Breakfast and 3 oz. firm teriyaki Wildwood tofu for lunch. Was awesome to chew again. Didn’t feel full either meal, which scares me a bit because I still have no idea when to quit eating.

Move forward, but make sure you only have approved foods in your house and avoid triggering situations (e.g. in and out of the grocery store/pharmacy instead of browsing).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
