March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!

Hi March people! I am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on March 5th. I am getting nervous, anxious and excited. I work a desk job (accounting) wondering how much time people take off for Bypass (robotic) before heading back to work. I am tenatively taking a week off then will work from home for 2 weeks before heading back to the office.

My sister took 2 weeks off from her bypass surgery (office job, but had 2 little kids under 10 at home). My old boss took 4 weeks (teacher). Neither had robotic surgery which research said costs more but is supposed to be less painful with potentially faster recovery. I work in elementary special ed, and I'm taking 2 weeks (Mar 26-Apr 7) going back on a half day/non-instruction planning Wednesday to see how I feel. I might take the rest of that week off for an extra 4 days if I'm healing slow.

I'm taking 3 weeks off. Just to be on the safe side. I will take more if I need it.

That's a great idea. I'm going food shopping this weekend since I start my liquid diet on 2/18. I just dont want to buy unnecessary stuff.

So, I've been reading up on all of the things that I'm to do/eat post op, but I don't know what to do about the Vitamins. Should I go Gummy or liquid? I'm leaning towards liquid....

My clinic paperwork says patients will generally be able to swallow any med under the size of a pinkie nail after surgery. Pill powder (or crushed pills) can be put in thin liquid or applesauce. They recommend one a day Bariatric Fusion Multivitamins but to take them x2 a day. The nutritionist said to either get the chewable or to open up the capsule and put it in a spoon of food/fluid. I have a splitter already but a pill crusher might be handy.

I am scheduled for bypass on March 10th, but if I can get the financial stuff figured out earlier, it can be rescheduled to March 3rd. I am super nervous but excited. I lost 90 pounds on a medically supervised weight loss in 2018 and then my thyroid misbehaved and I gained it all back and then some. I have boxes full of clothes I would like to wear again, lol. Plus I want to be able to fly comfortably. I currently do Orange Theory 3 times a week and I am going to miss that during the post-op downtime!

I didn't see an official thread so I started one! I finally got my date in March on St. Patrick's Day just before my birthday. I'm excited and anxious all at once. It could have been scheduled in late Jan/Feb but the bari center didn't get the Doctor's clearance that they were looking for and I had to wait until she got off of her winter break to get her to redo it, and then it took a couple of weeks for me to finally call them. They had called but either didn't leave a message or didn't leave the right number (because they are associated with the hospital) so it took a while, plus I'm too busy at work right now to take off anyway.

Now that it's all set up, I have to spend the next month or so preparing the house, starting with the kitchen. Everything that I can't eat anymore is gonna get tossed. Starting Tuesday, I will be going to the bari classes so that I can get my head totally into this. The waiting has been annoying, but it's all falling into place. Sometimes I can't believe I'm really doing this!

March 10th for sleeve here. I have to start my liquid diet end of February, so I'm trying to get mentally prepared. Looking for any March surgery buddies!

I am having my second attempt at surgery on 3/26. The first attempt failed due to my blood pressure and oxygen dropping to low after I was given the anesthesia. They called the surgery off since they didn't want to stress my system anymore that day. I have had many tests and visits with specialists to make sure they have a plan to overcome the problem for the next attempt. They say that I was dehydrated and the medicine I was given didn't dissipate through my body like it should have. Therefore causing my heart to stress out.

This second attempt is making me nervous, but I do trust that my doctor would not be doing it if he didn't have confidence that the plan he has in place was solid. I am really excited, but of course nervous, but really need to get this done for health reasons. So hope and pray that God is with me.

I'm on 3/26 too, we can be surgery buddies! Maybe try flavoring your Water with sugar-free sweetner (coffee syrups have better variety/cheaper prices than other packets, imo), set timers to keep sipping, whatever takes. My pulse is really low lately, so I'm seeing my regular doctor to adjust/change my meds, so I get the fear about your heart during surgery. At least you have surgeon who is paying attention to your whole body health, right?

Do you have to do a liquid diet? My program is a 2 week "milk diet" with a Clear Liquids only the day before surgery.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
