Did anyone go crazy before pre op diet started?

Recommended Posts

Ugh. I am there right now! I start my pre-op A week from today and I have this whole week planned with my favorite dinners. I'm trying really hard not to go too crazy but it's a little hard. I'm trying to be very careful for Breakfast and lunch so that I can enjoy my dinner. And it's not horrible food but things I won't be eating post-op like meals with potatoes, pastas and that type of thing.

I did that along the way. My therapist recommended doing one a week so it’s more like a cheat meal than a freak out. Than I could enjoy the meal and not feel guilt. I get really sick on Keto (which is what my preop liquid diet was) so I decided to start Jan 2 eating keto food so that I can get over the keto flu before going back to work. On Jan 13 I started liquid and it went really well. My surgery was Jan 27, so I’m a week out tomorrow. My doctor said my liver looked really good, but I had been doing keto for almost a month (he has us do keto to shrink our liver).

I say all that to say this- BE CAREFUL. Going crazy over food will make you feel deprived when you start liquid. Say goodbye and make peace with it but don’t binge.

I started Keto at the beginning of January. It has not been too brutal. I have surgery on Wednesday. I have the same mindset as TatooedSeaStar about getting used to no more carbs, and being at peace with it. I have had 3 cheats all month. I am a little worried about the liquid diet post op. I got my eye on the prize, though.

You mean like having a "food funeral" of a bunch of bad foods while you could still have them? Sure, that's common.

I did go to a couple of restaurants the week before to eat things I knew I wouldn't be able to eat again for awhile, but I didn't go hog wild. I'd lost a ton of weight prior to surgery, so I didn't want to sabotage anything!

btw - I can eat almost anything now (I'm a few years out) except for super fatty meals. Most things "work" for me in moderation. So yes - you'll have to give up things, but you'll likely be able to eat them again at some point - again, in moderation.

I start my pre op diet next Saturday. I have done very well on the three month period losing about 10 pounds. For the next week I plan to go to my favorite Thai and Italian restaurants as well as make some really good meals: steak and potatoes, creamy casseroles, etc. During the liquid phase I will make some meals up for my husband for later as well as some Soups that I can puree when I get to that stage.

Thanksgiving was the week before I started my pre-op liquid diet. I had some small pieces of things but didn’t go too crazy. I just remember thinking that I’m worth more than how that food will momentarily make me feel.

I started soft pre-op diet approx a month before surgery. I did one Meal Replacement shake for breakfast and one for lunch then had a smaller meal for dinner (usually chicken, some steamed vegetable and a side sallad) and a small snack in the evening. I also drank Protein Shakes since I found one that I really like. (It tastes like milk without the fatty consistency.)

Actually, I was very glad I did this. It proved to me that I could eat this way and feel like im living a full life.

I wouldn't say I went crazy, but I didn't diet at all before starting the liquid diet and made a point of eating all of my favorite foods one last time. My last meal the day before surgery was a pizza and a quart of Baskin Robbins ice cream. (Yes, a quart--not a pint.)

I don't think it makes much difference what you eat before the liquid diet as long as you can be fully compliant once you start--and I was.

I had my surgery August 15th so almost six months out and I have not had a bowl of Pasta or a piece of pizza since my surgery however I had my share of both the week before the pre-op diet and I have no regrets having attended my own little food funeral, I enjoyed every bite and at this point if I hadn't indulged in my faves back then I would have wished I did.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
