Rapid weight loss and body hardware

Recommended Posts

Anyone else out there have permanent equipment in their body? Screws, rods, etc? I had bypass 1/27 and with preop diet and surgery I’ve lost 31# since Dec 26. This morning I woke up and the titanium rod I have in my back was sore- much like when I first got it. It’s been sore all day! I’m going to mention it at my 1 week check up Tues but I thought I’d ask here if anyone has had similar pain. It’s almost like it’s moved and scar tissue hasn’t formed around it ... anyway, just checking....

I don’t have hardware but I have had a failed back surgery. I am bone on bone at L3/L4

i had a severe increase in pain at that area post bypass. They hang you upside down on a table during surgery. My surgery was 5.5 hours long. I am thinking that is what aggravated my back. I can’t normally even lay flat on my back while conscious. My pain is getting better each week I get out from surgery. I hope that the same happens for you.

Seriously? Wow. I just thought it’s because I’ve been sleeping in the recliner instead of on my side. Hmmm I’ll ask Tuesday.

Yes you aren’t completely upside down but tilted towards being upside down. Gravity helps to move and keep organs out of the way.

It's called trendelenburg position. They tilt you from 15 to 30 degrees head down.

I have rods and screws in my lumbar spine, I was fused in 2017. I didn't have any pain there or other problem areas, I must just be lucky!

I have 2 titanium hip joints that ached for a few weeks. Lots of walking and starting to build new muscle although verry slowly seems to be doing the trick for pain. No meds.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
