Hello everyone. I had RNY gastric bypass on 12/2/19. Initially, I lost around 50 pounds in the first 5 weeks. During that time, I was only consuming 3-500 calories per day (just wasnt hungry). On my follow up visit with the surgeon, she expressed concern that I was not getting enough calories and wanted me to shoot for 1100 per day. I have done my best to increase my caloric intake but it has required me to eat higher calorie food in order to do so (not what I would consider to be diet food at all). I have been able to get up to an average of around 800-900 calories per day now. Since increasing my calories, I have nearly stopped losing weight. Over the last three weeks+ I have only lost 5 pounds which is very frustrating after seeing that first 50 pounds fall off so quickly. The last 7 days, my weight hasn’t moved at all. Am I doing something wrong or is this just a long stall that should go away soon?

I should add that my starting weight was 308 and I’m now stuck at 255

there is a notorious 4-6 week stall that most wls patients go through. You can search it will pop up everywhere. I personally think 1100 is too many calories this early but im not your surgeon and every doc is different. Even at 1100 calories you will be at a deficit tho. Focus on your Proteins and drink your Water and stay the course. You will continue to lose. Dont get frustrated. I am in a stall right now. It happens. embrace it.

it's a stall. And your 800=ish calories sounds about right for where you are. (the suggested 1100 sounds a bit high ....at least for now). You should definitely be losing weight on that, so you're almost certainly in a stall. It'll break. My first stall lasted two weeks. A friend of mine's lasted 3.5. Stay off the scale if you need to, but that stall will eventually break.

P.S. I agree with the above poster in that we are not your surgeons, but 1100 calories is kind of uncommon for someone five weeks out.

Okay, that makes me feel a little better. When I changed my diet in order to increase my caloric intake, I added some carbs back in and I’m averaging around 70g of carbs per day. Could the carbs be causing my body to not burn fat even though I’m still in a caloric deficit?

yeah i would try to lower that a little and make sure youre hitting your Protein goal. Personally till this day almost 7 months out i still have a Protein Shake for Breakfast and lunch. Its been working this far.

You're at the right time for a stall, they happen around that time, so it could be that and it lasts a couple of weeks. 800 calories really sounds like where you should be at this point.

I was @ 261lb on Jan 7 and I’m at 255 now. That’s 23 days to only lose 6 pounds and the scale hasn’t moved at all in 10 days. I’m now 8 weeks post op. I think I’m going to cut back the carbs again and TRY to still cram 800 calories in and see what that does.

Too much carbs and too many calories.

I'm 3 months out and I get max 700cal and 30g carbs a day.

Dietitians don't seem to understand bariatric surgery guidelines.

just eat Protein first with a gravy/sauce of some kind and veggies well cooked, that is more important than calories, take your time eating your food too and just try to aim for 800-900cals, some days you will some days you won't but the most important thing is getting close to your protein goals x

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
