Hey all!

I just had my surgery on Tuesday and I am so happy to have found this site. I know I'm only 4 days post op so this may be a little bit of a silly question but I thought I'd get some insight.

Not going to lie it's been a pretty painful recovery so far. I'm just taking Tylenol as the Tramadol was giving me some weird side effects. Anyways, it's quite painful if I pull my shoulder blades back and stand up straight. If I'm hunched the pain really is non existent. The pain when I do this is on the right side, internally, feels like something is being stretched that shouldn't be. I'm assuming it's just muscle/organ healing etc. It's also quite painful to get get up from laying down or try and roll side to side. Again I'm only 4 days post op so I'm not overly concerned but any insight or similar healing stories would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Jamie

All normal. find a small, firm pillow to press over your tummy when you stand, walk, or roll out of bed. It was my best buddy for at least 2 weeks. If you lie down on your side, you can also use it to prop up your tummy so it doesn't flop down and cause more stretching. The little incisions on the outside are NOTHING compared to what went on inside. Healing will take at least a couple of months. The pain will gradually get better, but what you are experiencing now is completely normal and expected.

I didn't have much pain overall, but transitioning (going from lying to sitting - or sitting to standing) was tough. I felt like I'd done a million crunches or something. It got better every day, though. I'm pretty sure I was OK by the second week.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
