I am really wanting to get this surgery done. But here are my concerns, lack of will power, I have read on here that a person has to go with out eating prior to the surgery, I haven't missed a meal in 20 years :D. Then after surgery you don't eat again for a certain amount of time. Are you hungry? I thought I better ask now cause I am concerned that I will do this and die of starvation:embarassed::help:

Sooooo not hungry after surgery. It took about 5 days before I really missed eating anything. For those days right after surgery, just the sight of food would make me nauseous. As far as pre op diets, every surgeon is different. Mine said no foods after midnight the night before surgery. Some doctors require liquids only for 10 days, some doctors require low carb, check with your surgeon for their requirements.

Also, as far as will power is concerned, you don't need that much. The band makes it easier (not easy, easier) to lose the weight. Keep reading the posts on here, you'll get a good feel for what to expect...

It's not a starvation diet before surgery (although it might feel like that for some people) It's usually a liquid diet, Optifast or similar. So it's not like you eat nothing....

And post op, again, you are usually on liquids for a couple of weeks, then mushy type foods for another two weeks or so, then on to real food (although the length of the post op diet varies from surgeon to surgeon)

It's really not as bad as it sounds.

Right after surgery you're not hungry for about the first week, maybe longer if you're lucky. Then you're so terrified of screwing up your band/stomach/esophagus/all of the above that you won't want to eat the wrong way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
