Never felt this depressed before

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

I had my MGB on the 27th Dec 2019 in Istanbul. I am now back in the UK, 15 days post op my wound is still leaking, I’ve had it restitched once already. I had to have an open surgery rather then laparoscopic because of a umbilical hernia.

my diet is not going to plan at all, I am currently eating yoghurts and pieces of chicken here and there. I can’t complete my Water intake as I just feel nauseous.

I feel so low, everyday I just find myself crying and regretting this decision. My family are so supportive yet all I can think of is when will I feel better, when will I be normal again, why did I do this surgery, why won’t it heal.
My BMI was 53 and I’ve lost 12kg since the surgery which I know is great but all I want to do is cry.

can someone please give me ideas of what I can eat, I can have soft foods now. I would also appreciate any words of encouragement or better yet someone who went through something similar

Rosy x

A difficult time for you.

It isn't all that long since your surgery perhaps you'd be better off doing liquids for the next few weeks as opposed to chicken. With liquids think of the consistency that would pass through a straw. This would allow time for you to recover and your stomach to heal from the surgery. I know there are lots of different protocol after surgery depending on the surgeon, but giving yourself to heal would be beneficial. You could tackle pureed/soft foods in a week or two. Did your surgeon give a list of soft foods? Do you have a dietician who is knowledgeable about weight loss surgery? If not, it would be to your benefit to link up with one.

Right now your priorities would be fluids and Protein. You do not want to become dehyrdated and your body needs the protein to assist in the healing and to help maintain lean body mass.

hey rosy I have dm'd you too, but i am 5 months out and still can't do chicken. there is no rush stick to soft foods. My dietician told me to stick to Soups with dry crackers (yes i know not the norm but it is due to my awful nausea and too low calories). I find minced meat much better so i mostly have minced pork and veggies but only a couple of mouthfuls. Also you need some anti nausea drugs xx

Rosy, it's not unusual to go through a whole range of emotions after WLS. Many of us use food as a coping mechanism and now that has been removed from us. You will work through other ways to handle life's issue than food! Also it takes a body a while to recover. Hang in there, and it WILL get better.

As far as the Water, I had trouble too, but that will pass. You have to be patient with yourself as you get used to your new digestive system. Don't push the issue with the water, sip while you can but don't be frustrated if you can't toss back cups at a time. It will get easier with time.

Visit here often, and let us know how you are doing, OK? We are with you!

We’re glad your here Rosie, your not alone in this journey. I was not eating chicken yet at 3 weeks, but stuck with soft foods (2 bites) at most, of yogurt, avocado, or mashed vegan ball in Bone Broth. I mainly still did the liquid diet. I wish you the best of luck. You have been through a lot. Your body has been through even more. Big hugs, and remember to take everything one day at a time.

Hang in there, Rosy! I echo what everyone said about staying with liquids for a while. You've had a large portion of a major organ removed, and your body needs time to heal. Your new Baby Yoda stomach can't handle too much right now.

I had a few tough days after the surgery mentally because I am so used to sitting down in front of the TV or with a book and snacking away. Or when bored, I used to automatically reach for food. Now that isn't an option, so I became quickly frustrated and went down into the "why did I do this" hole. After a few days of sitting down with a Protein Shake or Oikos Triple Zero yogurt instead, I'm starting to feel better about breaking my bad habits for good. And no regrets. I realized I have to create new, healthy habits. It took me about a week to turn the corner on that.

It's only been two weeks and surgery and anesthesia probably released some hormones that are making you more emotional than usual. It gets better. Hang in there.

I had colon surgery in December 2018 and it took 3 weeks for my big incision to stop draining. For the first week it was leaking a lot. Fat people are prone to seroma's. A seroma is a pocket formed by the accumulation of serous Fluid after surgery. The surgeon says it was nothing to worry about as long as the fluid was clear and not cloudy. But it did bother me as it would leak through the dressing. It will get better.

Early out drinking feels like aquarium gravel, try different temperatures and flavors, Bone Broth, sf crystal light diluted, warm Decaf tea, etc. I liked ready-made blue raspberry Isopure, if you can find it in the UK. Staying hydrated is very important as it can be hard to catch up once you are in that state. If you find yourself getting light headed increase liquids and salt.

Your will be emotional on and off during this journey, hormones get wacky and you will miss food, right now you miss chewing. This all passes in time. Hang in there. Find a new hobby, go to a bariatric support group if you can.

Rosie, you got this. Having the larger incision is harder on you, mentally and physically. But you will heal! Try pro-t gold in tea. It tastes like berries and may help you heal a bit more quickly. I tried it and it helped. Praying for you girl! Surgery sisters are here! (And brothers 🙂)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
