My Drs. told me that surgery would pretty much eliminate my PCOS, would like feedback about this from ladies that have PCOS and have had the surgery. Thanks for any info you can give.

I was told the same too. Based on my own personal research that included countless journal articles and talking to both doctors and fellow PCOS patients, it sounds like as long you stay compliant, it will eliminate it.

However, there are the precious few exceptions. Remember, thin people can get PCOS too. While most symptoms of PCOS are heightened by obesity, some can linger despite weight loss. My endo./ob-gyn informed me that some times, patients still have to take spironolactone and progesterone. It will just be in smaller doses. But the insulin resistant medication/s (i.e., Metformin) you will no longer need.

Everything is determined by your post-op blood work. Make sure to keep abreast of your hormone panels and follow up with whoever is treating you for PCOS. Especially with rapid weight loss, your hormones will be changing at a constant rate until you've reached your goal weight and are at satiety.

I hope that helped some! Good luck with everything. Love from a fellow "cyst-er."

I have not heard of PCOS being resolved by surgery. Type2 diabetes yes. I have PCOS and was told I would have it util menopause. I was taken off Metformin right after surgery. I still have PCOS.

kc892020, Thank you for the information, it looks like we are having our surgeries a day apart, mine is the 14th. My bariatric team is also the ones treating my PCOS so I am lucky in that respect. I will be happy to get rid of the metformin, I have not seen any real difference with the spironolactone and I do not take progesterone. I was taking Victoza but ins quit paying for it. I also saw that you are from Ohio, I am originally from Ohio too. I hope you have great success, please let me know how it goes and if your PCOS symptoms subside.

Kimberly3, The Drs stated that the bypass was the one that would change hormones enough to take away my PCOS. I am also pre-menopausal so between the two hopefully something will work.

Thank you so much for the kind words, and it's nice to meet a fellow Ohioan. :)

I wish you the very best of luck and success as well! Ugh, I remember Victoza. I was on that at one point, then they switched me to Trulicity, which I've been off of since August.

Metformin is a brutal drug if you're on it long term like I've been, so I can't wait to get off that too. :)

Take care! Good luck! :)

In the words of my doctors, the keyword is "compliance." As long as we're compliant with what our new lifestyle requires, we should be ok. Even if we're not completely cured of it, at least we can look forward to alleviating many of our symptoms!

I have been on Metformin for many years so I know how brutal it is, I hate it. Luckily today is may last day of taking it. I started with Byetta and I could not take how nauseous I was constantly, was switched to Victoza in 2013 and had been on it until September, they wanted my to switch to trulicity but ins would not pay for that either. take care and you will be on the losers bench on Monday!

Oh gosh, I was on Byetta too...I actually passed out while on that medication during a presentation. Talk about embarrassing! Lol it's funny, for the first it's going to be a GOOD thing to be on the loser's bench!

We've got this!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
