LawrenShrinking 1 Posted January 4, 2020 I’m having such a hard time. I had surgery 11/15. Nearly everything makes me nauseated. I’m never hungry. Is there ever a point where you can take normal bites again? Will there be a point where it is possible to eat “normally” again? Eating meat scares me, it never seems to go down ok or sit well. I just want to feel normal again. I usually feel nervous about eating because it is so unpleasant. What is eating like further out from surgery? 1 Losingit2018 reacted to this
Losingit2018 1,170 Posted January 4, 2020 I had conversion from sleeve to bypass on 11/22. I have also had a hard time finding things that will sit well in my stomach. I am not even able to drink the same shakes that I drank after my sleeve. I saw my dr at the 4 week mark. He said not to worry as long as I can get my fluids and at least 60 grams of Protein in. I do this by making sure that I drink two shakes per day. I have never been one to eat dark meat poultry but I did break down and try a drumstick from a rotisserie chicken. That ended up being the easiest meat that I have tried so far. try to get your protein and fluids in even if by shakes. Hopefully you will be able to tolerate more meat at a later time. I do eat a few bites of meat at dinner with my husband but I really can’t eat much at all. you are not alone

I felt exactly like you do now. I'm 9 months out and I still hit a snag and I'm still learning but it is WAAAY better than it was earlier on. I can eat different meats and different foods normally I just eat smaller bites and smaller portions and I chew chew chew. You'll be fine just know that this is the best thing you could have done for your health. Take some deep breathes and relax you can do this.
catwoman7 11,220 Posted January 4, 2020 losing hunger is VERY common. It comes back for most of us sometime during the first year. I was actually very happy to lose it and wished I was one of those lucky few for whom it never returned - but alas, mine came roaring back after about the fifth month... the nausea thing isn't normal, though. Is it mostly after you're eating? If so, you're in that window when strictures develop, so it could be something like that, too. I'd call my clinic and just let them know what's going on. It could be as simple as taking smaller bites and chewing things more, as other posters mentioned. But if it turns out it's a stricture, then you'll need to get that "fixed" (and it's an easy fix - I had two of them)
AZhiker 2,253 Posted January 4, 2020 It's going to get better. It just takes time. You are still healing on the inside. Don't rush the process. I felt like I really turned a corner at about 4 months out. Be patient and it will come.
always 59 Posted January 4, 2020 I was able to start tolerating more around 5 months. Now at 7 months still mostly fish and dark chicken and never any reheated meats. Good luck it does slowly get better. You have an infant stomach it needs time. You won't give a newborn hamburger to eat. Slow small amounts easy to digest high Protein. An example Scallops little protein balls and easy on the pouch.
JRT Mom 919 Posted January 4, 2020 It's amazing how many people can't "stomach" the Protein Shakes. After I got my lap band 10 years ago I lived on them. Now I can't get them down. Sounds like most of the bypass patients can't drink them.
AZhiker 2,253 Posted January 4, 2020 Make your own Protein smoothies. Milk (or milk substitute), 1 scoop Protein Powder, fresh greens (spinich, kale), some frozen berries, 1/4 banana, and you are good. Use a blender or Ninja or magic bullet - whatever, and make a delicious, nutritious smoothie. A lot of the Protein Drinks are meant to be Meal Replacements. I think all the extra Vitamins may be what irritates some people. Making your own smoothie is healthier and less expensive.
Beast(RNY) 4 Posted January 10, 2020 I’m 3 1/2 months post surgery and mostly stick to skim milk, tea with milk, low-fat cottage cheese, mashed potatoes and homemade (puréed) chicken Soup made with Chicken stock, canned chicken, frozen carrots and frozen mashed potatoes. Wish I had known that chicken breast was a no no. Two small - well chewed - bites at 6 weeks out landed me in the Emergency room after 16 hours of vomiting. My surgeon acted like I was an idiot for not knowing to eat dark meat. 3 weeks of vacation in the US was hard. Tried small bites of lots of things and vomited a lot (even when I spit things out without swallowing). So glad that I haven’t vomited once in the last week since being home to Australia. - Beast (Brisbane)

Darker meat is moister.
