Feeling Heartburn Since Surgery on 12/30

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I am now home from the hospital. I was told by the surgeon that surgery was successful. I am asking to please give me your feedback on what I am physically feeling. I am on clear-diet, but am feeling some heartburn even when I try to eat diet free Jello or drink a clear Protein. Also, my stomach is semi-upset all day, a bit nauseous. I have started walking, but feel I need to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes for #1 or #2 although all is liquid. Just wondering if anyone else felt these symptoms after 3 1/2 days post-surgery? Maybe I am doing something wrong. Oh and even the thought of drinking broth is grossing me out. I pray things get better, but I would appreciate your wisdom. Thank you, JoeJohn

Did they not give you prilosec? If not, ask for it for 3 months following surgery. Or take something OTC

#1-it's not uncommon to have some heartburn in the early days. It's probably also contributing to the nausea. Many doctors prescribe a proton pump inhibitor right out of the gate. Some patients are able to stop after a period and some take them long-term. Call your doctor and ask him recommendations for PPI's.

#2-regarding going to the bathroom every 20 minutes: If you're drinking your fluids as you should, you have to excrete them. I would think this would even out at some point. If your BMs are liquid, that's also not terribly unusual. liquids in=liquids out, regardless of which orifice they're coming out of.

All these new experiences can be scary, but so far it sounds like you're perfectly normal. When in doubt, call your doctor.

Bonus: if the thought of drinking broth is grossing you out, drink bouillon. I don't particularly care for broth, but I like bouillon. Also, Unjury makes a good Protein chicken soup/broth that would qualify as a clear liquid. Even when I wasn't on Clear Liquids anymore, I'd have that for lunch to get a protein boost. Caution: bouillon and Unjury's Chicken Soup are high in sodium.

Your body is still expelling the anesthesia and recuperating from the surgery. Heartburn is normal for a while. Keep getting that Water in and stay hydrated. It all gets better within a week.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
