After your RNY BYPASS how long did your doctor want you to take Opmeprozole?

I'm a sleeve patient and I was provided with Omeprazole the day I was released from the hospital. I have only taken it maybe three times as I have noticed certain foods I have eaten gave me that funny almost heartburn feeling. I was not given any directions from my doctor as to how long I should be on this, and my bariatric doctor's name isn't on the prescription. I don't know who this is smh. Maybe it's his partner he told me about at my 4 week follow up (shrugs).

Mine is for two months. It's supposed to help keep acid down so your pouch and remnant can heal better.
Ya know, whenever someone posts a question, everybody has different recommendations from their surgeons. Doesn't matter whether it's food, medicine, back to work, etc, the answers are ALWAYS all over the map. I mean we are all humans getting the same surgery, but the advice is soooo different. Seems they should have a conference and make up a handbook with consistent advice for us.
I totally agree. It's not even about the US vs Canada. Just the doctors here in the US are so diverse, especially right here in Houston. You would think we should be doing the same things at the same time, but no, we're not. Totally weird.

I asked my Dr this today. I used to take Omeprazole regularly, but as soon as my band was deflated then removed I did not need it. So Now just had a bypass done and was told to take it for 8 weeks to keep ulcers away!

Thank you. My surgeon just handed me the prescriptions as I was leaving the hospital. I didn't think to ask as I was just happy to be going home.

That was me also. Too tired and sore to think about questions. But emailed my provider today and got the answer. So a little late starting (surgery was 1/8) but started today!!

I was told 6 months. I have a few refills though so I may just continue until I run out.

Thank you all for your responses. As with everything else, the surgeons are just winging it. No set procedures evidently.

I have to take for 3 months then will discuss if needed longer. I hope I don’t need it, it feels really great to be only taking the one pill daily compared to a bunch.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
