Stuck in a Plateau for Three Months

Recommended Posts

I have gained so much from this community that I wanted to share my own experience in hopes that it would comfort someone else. I had gastric sleeve July 18, 2019. Like most people, the weight just fell off the first three months (25 lbs.) then I hit the dreaded plateau in November; for some reason my body wanted to hang out at 160. I was worried I was done losing. I started to step up my exercise to get over the hump, but then I injured my knee. Long story short, I am now losing again even though I can’t exercise just yet due to a knee sprain. I know gastric sleeve is supposed to take away your hunger; that did not happen for me. I most definitely get fuller faster, but I find myself eating more often and not losing. My appetite has always been my Achilles heel; I am always hungry. I started taking Contrave, and ai am now losing again. It really helps control my appetite. It felt so great to jump on the scale This morning and see 156lbs.. Stalls are frustrating, but they do happen and you can even stall for three months. Don’t lose faith, and don’t beat yourself up. You will start losing again; it just takes time.

Wow congrats on getting the scale moving again. I have been losing so very slow, and it is frustrating. I lose, I go up a pound then I come down again. I have one re pound until I get to 50 pounds gone. It does just take time and patience!

Congrats on getting back to losing again! Stalls are the worst! Sorry about the injury. Heal quickly!

So the last 20-40lbs for me were the hardest to take off. I had to be SO compliant it was cray. And I also had to add IF and EF to the mix to hit my goals.

Also, what is a typical day of food like for you? What are you eating? Are you eating any high glycemic carbs like grains and starches and root veg or breads/pasta/rice etc? Are you eating a lot of cheese and dairy and "lush" calorie dense foods? What do your Snacks look like?

Usually with uncontrolled hunger it's directly attributable to insulin/blood sugar roller coasters caused by a big insulin bg response. Or it can also be behavioral/head hunger...

I have found that it isn't exactly the hunger, but the remaining habit of boredom eating. When I am really busy, I have no problems avoiding food. I have been trying to keep up busy work hobbies, like coloring, so that my hands are busy. I am having a stall too, and while I hate that is happening to any of us, I am glad I'm not alone.

One question though, what is IF and EF, mentioned by fluffychix?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
