I avoided eating any carbs for so long but finally started eating whole grain bread about 5 weeks ago. I was scared to start eating carbs because they were my "vice" and I didn't want to get "re-addicted" to them. But now all I friggin' eat is bread! Yesterday I had two slices of bread with Peanut Butter and cream cheese, and two slices of bread with butter, and some lentil Pasta. That's it. I eat a lot of bread every day in lieu of veggies or meat or anything else. It started with me making those toad in the hole things (eggs in a basket), but now I just toast bread and put some kind of spread on it. My mind cravvvess bread. I am not gaining any weight, but I am also eating basically nothing else besides bread or whole wheat crackers so it's not exactly nutritionally balanced. This is exactly what I thought would happen!

I think I need to finish out the loaves of bread I have and put it back on my "NEVER AGAIN" foods list since I just can't seem to control myself. I am like a pigeon. Do you guys have any foods you know you can tolerate but are just not eating ever again for the same reason?

Hopefully no adverse side affects from all the carbs and hopefully it doesn't become a major stall soon from the bread...

I am not in weight-loss mode anymore. I've long reached my goal weight so.. no concern about a stall. Even with 4 slices of bread I'm only at about 100g of carbs a day, which is what my dietitian says I should be at. But I shouldn't eat ONLY bread.

Pasta: I had it for the first time at 11 months post op while on vacation. It was delicious. Haven't had it since I got back home. I figure I'll keep it as vacation food.

(I also tried regular bread and rice during the same vacation, but surprisingly they didn't do much for me, so not eating them is no biggie)

On the other hand, I know I can't tolerate sugar (i.e., desserts) in large quantities, but I indulge anyway. Sometimes its worth it, most times it's not. LOL.

P.S. Can you swap out the regular bread with some no/low-carb bread? So you can still enjoy with less "carbi-consequenes"?

The bread I usually eat is actually pumpernickel or thin rye so it's already under 20g of carbs. It's not the carb count I am concerned with since I am still at where my dietitian says I should be... it just... takes up space in my stomach and now I am eating like NO Protein. There is no happy medium! lol. I think I just need it to be a treat if I go to a restaurant or something. I never used to eat toast pre-op but now I am droollllinggg thinking about it.

Have you tried lentil Pasta? I get sick from regular pasta, but I buy lentil fettuccine Zeroodles and it is really good and super filling. Nom nom.

Still don't want to get back into old habits

Experiment with other carbohydrate foods that wont trigger old behaviors.

Bagels trip me up. When I have them I crave them . They whisper sweet nothings to me *smile* I cant have just one. Its my addiction food.

Carbs that don't trip me up are sweet potato. I add brown rice in stir fry ( a small amount won't bloat me) I eat flat out bread for pizza or sandwiches. (high Fiber, low carb added protein)

Hope you find what works for you

Nope never tried it. I've seen it in the grocery and always linger and read the labels but have never actually put any in my cart. If I ever have a major craving (which I haven't so far) I may just have to try. The closet I get to pasta are Shiratake noodles, which are nowhere close to actual delicious pasta, but it'll do, LOL.

Girlfriend. You've just described a slippery slope. You are seeking it preferentially. And it's lighting up your brain like heroine.

When a food does that to me, I flag it and red light it.

The "low-carb" pastas I've seen in grocery stores never actually seem to be low carb. Very weird. I haven't seen Zeroodles in store - I get them off Amazon. The shiratake stuff weirds me out since it's m o i s t. lolol.

Good for you! When it hits "preferentially" for me where it displaces my healthy normal food (protein and veg), I know it's a trigger deluxe (at least at the present time). Glad to hear you're doing that!

You might try my chaffles. Pretty dang bread like, super low carb, high Protein and fiber, and just a perfect size to get your protein in too. :D And it doesn't make me eat them preferentially.

Semi on topic. But I actually really like Edamame & Black Soybean Pasta. They are pretty decent substitutes for regular pasta and have a huge amount of Protein, and moderate carbs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
