Hypoglycemia after surgery???

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone else had issued with your sugar levels dropping after surgery? This had never happened to me before. Even after having getting my sleeve. Now with the Gastric Bypass it seems to be happening a lot. I almost passed out at work. I'm really scared :(

I have what we think is RH (reactive hypoglycemia). My PCP suggested eating something every three hours or so. Seems to work for the most part.

Yes! I developed low blood sugar about a week after my RNY. Was told to drink a Protein Shake when it got too low, because we shouldn't have sugar. It leveled out. I had been diabetic before bypass, so this was a surprise! I eat every 3 hours, too.

3 meals per day and 2 or 3 planned healthy Snacks so you are not going too long without food. Also avoid high carb and sugary foods as these cause reactive hypoglycaemia. If you do get a drop you need to manage it the same way as when you are diabetic. Something to bring your levels up quickly and yes that might be juice followed by something healthy to keep it stable. A small quantity of juice followed by something like a banana or whole meal crackers with Protein should help.

Yes. I had it for the first two weeks after bypass revision. Dr said this is common with rny. Told me to drink a shake or something with just a bit of sugar when I have these episodes. They seem to have stopped now though.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
