3rd day post-op (board newbie)

Recommended Posts

Hey all! I frequented this board regularly for many different scenarios prior to my surgery that I had on Tuesday, December 17th at 7:30 am.

For my pre-op diet, I was very active as a basketball official and also playing in open gym so on those days I would add in extra Protein filled calories. I still lost 18 pounds on the two week pre-op while giving up pop and all the foods I normally liked to eat. I was also sick with a nasty cold and I was worried that I might get postponed. I had an endoscopy upper GI four days before my sleeve procedure and the surgeon cleared me for surgery that day.

When I checked in on the morning of surgery, I was given two shots of meds to help prevent nausea. One of these meds made my very hot, agitated, and uncomfortable! I even asked if I could back out because I was so uncomfortable. Luckily the anesthesiologist came in and gave me something to help me relax.

I went into surgery and laid on my side. There were a lot of people there with one woman trying to make conversation, but before I knew it, I was out. When I woke up I had a very sharp pain in my chest and was sweating profusely. They put wet clothes over my head to cool me down and also ran two EKG tests on me. They eventually decided that it was just gas or a sore esophagus from the procedure.

When I went to my room, I remember feeling the pain in my chest. There was no incision pain then and to this day, I still haven't had any incision pain. On the day of surgery I was given ice chips and some broth to drink. I got very little of both down and slept the rest of that day and night. I was given a regular Powerade by mistake and downed about an 8th of it before the night shift nurse realized that was a big no no. (It was so good though and went down smooth!) The surgeon was going to release me on Wednesday, but I still had that gnawing pain in my chest so I stayed an extra day just to be sure since I'd be traveling 3 and a half hours one way!

Each morning, I'd get my blood taken and give shots and pills. I was able to do a lap around the floor finally as my first attempt resulted in a coughing and gagging fit. Getting the IVs out before being released was a great feeling!

I've been at home since Thursday and I got 50+ oz. of liquids in that day and 64 oz. in on Friday. I had a shaved ice and it went down so easy! Protein Shakes are becoming repulsive now, I gag just thinking about them but I got one and a half of them down. I thought gum wouldn't be a big deal, but whoa my new pouch did not appreciate the attempt!! I've been reading things on here to get more protein in. I even saw someone post about sugar free Lifesavers as a treat, awesome! Thanks for all of your help. I'm down 10 pounds since surgery when I checked on Friday morning.

One thing i suggest since you are active - Get really good with the Vitamins, Minerals and supplements, It took me awhile to get balanced out but once i did was like super power, Biggest change i had

Dale P--you got this! You are at an advantage over lots of us here since you are already physically active. The pounds are gonna melt right off of you! I hope you took "before" pictures because we are gonna see great results from you, I know it!

If the chocolate shakes are repulsive (they were to me, also) find some Isopure zero carb Protein Drinks. They are clear, not viscous at all, and go down smoothly. sugar free popsicles are also a godsend.

Good luck--keep us posted!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
