5 days post op! My story this far.

Recommended Posts

Things are going great! Was sleeved on 12/12. After surgery I came out of anesthesia coughing and was brought to the recovery room and then hospital room. It was very uncomfortable. Had gas from the laparoscopy in my back which made sleeping in the hospital bed HARD! Hooked up to machines, tossing and turning most of the time I was there. Surgery was around 10:30AM, I was up walking around 6pm. They gave me ice chips to eat the first night. The next morning they did the swallow and leak test. All was well so I got to try some broth, lemonade and a popsicle. Didn’t get a lot down but enough for them to let me out around 3pm that day. The first day was the hardest as I was walking out the gas pain and each day gets better. Today, day 5, I’m home and have zero pain. Haven’t needed pain meds since the night before last. I have been doing housework and relaxing, sipping on my Protein Drink and Water and some creamy Soups. All in all, not bad at all. I am gonna take one more day off work and go back day 7. I have a desk job and I feel it’s pretty simple to incorporate in. I know I had a lot of questions and read so many different things pre-op, but it’s not until you go through it you know what YOU’LL experience. Today I wish I could have solid foods, but am doing ok on liquids. It’s a day to day thing at the beginning from what I’m seeing. Anyone wanna add about their immediate post-op experiences I would love to hear about them.

I’m glad your experience had been well so far and I hope it only continues to get better. I had my surgery this Monday 12/16 and I made it home the next day by 1pm. I definitely agree with extremely painful gas from the front to the back upon wake up. I got to my room and slept as soon as the morphine hit, I was/am so exhausted. I walked around 9pm and had ice chips and diluted apple juice.

Now that I’m home I’ve been keeping on top of my pain meds but hopefully won’t need anything but Tylenol soon. I tried Jello which was too sweet and chicken brith yesterday. Been drinking as much Water as I can and walking around the house.

I’m burping but I can’t wait till I can actually pass gas or have a bowel movement 😬 lol

Great to hear its going good. I would take as much time off as possible. I took 2 1/2 weeks and also have a desk job, wish I could have taken the 6 weeks offered. The issue is not the activity but this early on you are only taking in a few hundred calories a day. For me I was drained by the end of my shift. Congrats again on your journey this far.

@eporter I hope you’re doing better. I feel a significant change for the better each day. Walking helped me pass most of the gas. I don’t feel I have much of any anymore. I was told to take Miralax within a couple days for a BM. But my Protein had the Fiber I needed. Took me a few days though. Hope you’re feeling better today!!

@nenes78 I feel if I take anymore time off I’m gonna lose my mind lol. I know it will be exhausting at first but sitting around at home isn’t improving anything. I do know my job will work for me if it’s too bad. I am already going stir crazy lol

I am taking 3 weeks off. They told me I'd be okay with 2 weeks but gave me an extra week. I can't lift anything >20lbs for 6 weeks though which won't be an issue at work. What kind of creamy Soups are you having @jlb8080?

Thank you, I’m much better today compared to yesterday. I finally passed gas today and was overly excited lol my daughter came in the room like “Mom?!” 😂😂. I’ve been getting up and walking around the house as much as I can. What Protein are you having that has lots of fiber? All I have is chicken broth. May go get some miralax just to have it on hand

Are you making your own or buying a specific brand? My husband got me some Campbell’s cream of mushroom and cream of chicken that are both 98% fat free. But I’m so sick of sweet stuff that I’m trying to find alternatives. I did 2oz of cream of mushroom thinned out with 2oz of Water. Dear lord was it so yummy lol.

I like the 98% fat free mushrrom - undiluted. You just have to strain out the mushroom pieces. I thought the cream of chicken was gross, though.

Run don’t walk to Aquaviva when they have Cream of chicken Soup for soup of the day. (We live in the same area) I ate it strained one time then advanced to the next phase and didn’t strain it. I’m pretty sure I had it once a week for a few months. Warning, it’s a bit rich and might bother you if you have a sensitive stomach.

I swear they put crack in it, it is super good.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
