AlexInMerion 2 Posted December 16, 2019 Hi everyone. I had my bypass operation on Dec. 12, 4 days ago. Everything is going pretty much better than expected -- soreness is manageable and diminishing, no problem drinking everything I need to drink or taking all of my pills, etc. But here's my weird issue -- as of today, I have GAINED 9 POUNDS on the scale since the morning before my surgery. I figured it was just post-surgery Fluid retention, or getting loaded up with IV fluids while in the hospital, but my doctor's office seems absolutely stumped. Has anyone else had an experience like this? If you have, when will it go away? 1 FluffyChix reacted to this
Lynda486 784 Posted December 17, 2019 I gained 15 pounds while I was in the hospital from all the fluids they pump into you. Took almost 2 weeks to get rid of. 1 FluffyChix reacted to this
GradyCat 3,695 Posted December 17, 2019 It's totally just post-op Fluid and swelling from the surgery. It'll be okay. 1 FluffyChix reacted to this
GreenTealael 25,430 Posted December 17, 2019 Lactated ringers and Constipation may be the culprit. It takes a while for excess fluid/waste to leave your system and the scale to reflect your efforts. Good Luck 💚 2 FluffyChix and Lynda486 reacted to this
Tahmay 1 Posted December 17, 2019 You are definitely not alone. My surgery was 12/11 and I gained 8 lbs in the hospital. It’s gone but I have only lost 4 lbs on top of that and it is definitely discouraging.
Losingit2018 1,170 Posted December 19, 2019 I gained 13 pounds of Fluid in the hospital. It was gone in the first week.
al0vely 24 Posted December 19, 2019 Same problem ... I was horrified when I got home from surgery and weighed more than before surgery. It took almost the first week to get rid of that weight. I am following my plan and lose slower than what many post but I am losing around 2 -3 pounds a week ... which is OK with me.
Easypickens 0 Posted December 20, 2019 Hi, I'm new to the forum, but wanted to pass along a similar experience. After my surgery I gained 6 lbs when I got home from the hospital. For the first few weeks I didn't lose weight even though I was eating a ridiculously low number of calories. Hang in there and give it time. In the beginning I focused on following directions and walking off the gas they used during surgery. That gas was my only real pain. You got this.
