Struggling with liquids and food

Recommended Posts

I am struggling big time with trying to get down any liquids and food. I stay so nauseated it’s ridiculous. The thought of food makes me sick. I can’t even eat Jello anymore it’s like my taste buds are on strike. I sip tiny amounts of liquid and sometimes gag. Seems like the only food I can tolerate on occasion are my refried Beans, Peanut Butter on crisp toast otherwise I don’t eat because of the sickness. Geez Louise I’ve had more issues with this surgery than a little bit and I’m 19 days post-op. Anyone else have/had this issue?

Did your doc give you any anti nausea meds? Give him a call & see what he recommends.

Nausea can be the first sign of a stricture, if you start vomiting up anything immediately after you ingest it you need to go to the ER. If you're not vomiting right away I'd call your surgeon in the morning and see what s/he says.

No vomiting at all just nauseated. I’ll definitely be mindful if it happens.

@MsBrown76 your struggles are atypical. They are definitely related to this issue: Ileus.

You need to re-contact your surgeon and tell them of your continued struggle and what can and can't be swallowed. You need to get liquids and Protein in.

Did you ever end up pooping fully?

I am 4 months post op , and finding it very difficult to eat ,although Ive been drinking all the time , however, Ive started to feel nauseous when drinking .Ive started making Protein Shakes at mealtimes because so can get them down easier .

Peggy what type of Protein Shakes are you making? I was drinking the carnation instant Breakfast high Protein shakes but my taste buds no longer tolerate that. I’m 3 weeks post op. I’d like to try blending my own using frozen fruit but I can’t seem to get my nutritionist to respond if that’s okay. I may just have to try and see.

Hi Mrs Btown,

Congratulations on your surgery ! 🙂

I know what you mean, I used to have Slimfast , but couldn’t tolerate them after a while either.when I told my dietician I was making them with fruit , she said the only trouble is fruit has sugar in it . However I read in other places that we can have fruit as long as we pick the right ones , and in moderation I make them 2 different ways .

1). small amount of frozen berries

1 Protein shot.

Blitz it until it’s thick and smooth. If I want it a bit thinner , I put a little bit of sugar free squash or juice in. The protein shot gives you 24g of protein .

2). 1 scoop of flavoured whey Protein powder .

Approx. 1/2 pint of milk. ( or more if you want it thinner )

4 ice cubes . ( optional ).

Blitz until thick and smooth.

What I was advised by my dietician to up my protein , was to make up 1 pint of milk , with 4 tablespoons of skimmed milk powder , and use throughout the day . Gives you 40g of Protein !

How’s it going ? I wish you all the very best on your journey. 🙂 Good Luck !

Premier or Unjury. Also I was told no fruit until month 3 post-op but that's my plan.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
