Weigh gain - 3 years post op

Recommended Posts

I am almost 3 years post OP and have started gaining weight. Over the past 4 months I have gained about 15 lbs. I know I am doing some things wrong. Not prepping, eating on the go and more carbs. Should I go back to Protein Shakes? Any suggestions on how to get back on track. snack and meal prep suggestions if you have any as well. Thank you!

15lbs is not a large gain. You got this.

Some options to try,

Personally, I wouldn’t go back to shakes to rest. You will feel more satisfied with real food. Go back to bariatric basics. Follow your plan and log your food in an app like my fitness pal. stay within your weight loss calories/macros.

  • Get temptation foods out of the house go grocery shopping
  • Real sugar and extra carbs make you crave them more. They cause hunger Detox off them
  • When you deny cravings, you want them more - Keep healthy low-Calorie options for sweet/salty on hand
  • Eat dense Protein (not soft foods) with other items on your plan. Allow yourself to eat as much veggies as you want to satisfy hunger.
  • Join the December weight loss challenge for motivation.

The doctor put me on 2 Protein Shakes a day and one 400 calories meal a day. I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks. I did it for medical reasons, so it's a little extreme but I think you should go back to replacing at least one meal a day with a Protein Shake. You got this!

I think there are many roads to the same truth. :D

Love all the advice. Congrats on making the decision to take charge of the regain now while it's only 10-15lbs!

Check out this poll and give your feedback if you think you'd be open to this?

I honestly would go back to Bari Basics of your Forever Diet post surgery. That's the forever stage or highest stage. As @Healthy_life2 said, it's very important to clean house. :) Get rid of the crap in your pantry and fridge if possible. And if you live in a mixed house, see what you can do to sequester the crap to one spot that is not if your line of site! A separate cabinet or file drawer or fridge! Detox off the crap, especially sugar and white foods.

1. food log, plan, weigh, measure EVERYTHING that goes in your mouth, good and bad.

2. Protein first. Meet your protein goals each day.

3. Lo glycemic veggies are next. (Low Carb Keto Veggies)

4. A tiny bit of healthy fats to help with satiety and vit/min absorption.

5. Drink 100oz of Fluid per day (a good amount of it water).

6. Take your Vitamins and minerals daily.

7. Get back to walking and then to your forever exercise program.

8. Keep foods SIMPLE-try to avoid super caloric, super gratifying foods. I think they make you eat more and cause hunger quicker. Stick to dense lean clean Proteins and al dente veg and if still hungry low glycemic berries or underripe apples/pears in small quantities.

9. Weigh daily and take your measurements.

10. Deep breathe, do comedy therapy on Netflix, meditate or pray, hug your kids and fam/friends.

11. Ditch any caloric liquids other than the limited use of Protein Drinks.< /span>

12. Never underestimate the power of Rotisserie chicken from costco or Sam's. :D

You are not alone; though I'm now six years out this week (Dec. 3rd, 2013). In the past 1.5 years, I gained ~20-25 #s and I'm having a hard time losing them. Admittedly, I didn't stick to protein-only and began eating faster.

I'd gotten from HW: 271-->SW: 252-->180 lowest weight, size 10ish. Now I'm 202-204 pounds, ~ size 12-14. Grr. (In full disclosure, I had gotten back to 210 [209.8]. That would have been a full 30 pounds!!!) I work hard to NOT pick up potato chips (my nemesis and road trip snack).

I had the VSG and all that ghrelin area was whacked off 6 years ago. But ghrelin finds its ugly way back after ~ 5 years I'm told, and so the battle can resume.

I don't do the shakes because they mostly have sucralose/splenda and I do NOT lose with that. Fact. I don't. I gain.

So I'd say do all you can to get back to your steaks, fish, eggs, bacon, sardines, whatever, to break the cycle and get you back to no cravings. Just say NO when tempted to buy crap/bad carbs.

As some have told me "20 pounds, not that bad." But to me, it is. I never wanted to see 200 again. Also, I'm almost 65, so that might be a factor, but I'm not putting it on 'slower metabolism.'

But right now, I'm feeling stronger, so I hope to get under 200 by end of the year, if not by Christmas. Just step away from the bad stuff. Delight on steak, fish and eggs, etc.

I'm in same position as you less than 2.5 years out with 20 lbs regain. I'm going to really try to ditch the snacking and go back to basics, eating Proteins first. Please keep me posted on what happens. We can do this!!! A little motivation, along with some small changes can put us back on track. The main thing is to stay focused and not get discouraged. I'm starting tomorrow, wish me luck! Looking forward to see the scale moving in the downward direction.
Best of luck,
Chaya

I am at the same exact place.. I have had several 5 to 8 lbs ups and downs but now I’m almost 18lbs up and I can feel it. I need help getting back on track. I’m back to tracking my food and my carbs are out of control. Should I do a pouch reset? What macros should I be eating at this point?

Many options to try from people that experienced regain and worked it off. This site helped me get my head back in the game.

My gain was in my 3rd year. I worked it off. (I’m still maintaining five years out) Old behaviors slipped back in. My discipline was not at the same level as my first year. I have extra sleeve space and hunger feels different. I found ways to fill the extra space and keep calories low. I feel more satisfied with real whole dense foods. shakes and soft foods empty out of my pouch quickly (slider foods)

@Emilyme

Find what works for you. Try reset or real food stage. Reset does not shrink your stomach. Its one method to get back on track. For me, I found going back to liquids and soft foods too restrictive. I went back to real food stage and felt more satisfied.

Carbs - Slowly start reducing carbs and get them to your personal range. Detox *smile*

All of us have a different weight loss calorie/macro range. Using your food log app. Start at 1200 calories Carb range 50/60grams. You can dial your calories up or down by 100 to see where your body loses weight.

Doing the head work thread – the mental battles of getting back on track

@Dr-Patient

Is your Dr's WL plan Protein only?

Dear TRM, the unfortunate truth following sleeve surgery is that we all get our appetites back, and while we can't eat nearly as much, there are ways to beat the sleeve and put weight back on, ie, grazing, bad food choices, etc. My brother is finally getting sleeved on Friday, and I have repeatedly told him that the sleeve is only the jump start, you must diet the rest of your life! That being said, everybody is going to fluctuate, I put 5 lbs on over thanksgiving! Sunday morning, back on the plan, with a few extra shake meals for the first couple of days. I also weigh myself every other day, and try to never go too much over my goal weight, which helps to never get you to far off. The one killer is snacking, a bite here a bite there, not enough to fill you up, and before you know it, you've eaten another meal. Go back to basics, like others have said, weigh yourself frequently, and stay active, and you will lose it. You can never give up the fight!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
