Just wondering where my doc stands in the crowd when it comes to protien. I am supposed to get 90 grams per day. It's doable, but it certainley takes preplanning. I am just curious if other people have the same goal.

Mine is an absolute minimum of 60 grams and I always shoot for at least 80 grams.

It's not too tough with a Protein shake in the morning and one in the evening (at 20 grams+ for each)--plus if you buy unflavored Protein, you can add it to foods like instant pudding or Jello. Plus the Welcome to the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Homepage website has a chicken broth flavor protein which isn't too bad.

I only use whey protein isolate which is purer than the whey protein concentrate, which uses lactose as a filler and I'm lactose intolerant :nervous which I find at the above website and at Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, books, DVDs & more (with free shipping!)

The consequences of insufficient protein intake (especially for the rest of our lives) are just not worth it!

In the seven months leading up to my surgery, I read every article I could lay my hands on about Lap Banding and my future life.

Here's what I found that Womens Health (on the web) says:

"Lap-Band patients are advised to consumer fifty to sixty grams of Protein daily to avoid Protein deficiency. Protein deficiency causes hair loss, fatigue, edema, muscle weakness, and a delay in wound healing.

A lack of adequate protein may also lead to depression, anxiety, irritability, apathy, and other mental health conditions, as well as cause a number of physical health issues from gallstones to colds, headaches, low blood pressure, anemia, irregular heart rates and in extreme cases, death."

I took this article very seriously (I never listened in Health class, but thought now might be a good time to begin learning...) :(

I went through months of classes required by our Bariatric Program here before I was banded. It was ingrained into our heads that if you do not get enough Protein the consequences can be devastating.

We do not make Protein nor do we store it. What we get is what we eat every day. So you can see why we need to eat it in our food.

I make it a high priority, I always eat protein first and since I am still in the mushies stage I am pretty much just eating protein for my meals. I know this is so important to my overall health

My program requires no less than 60grms per day. You cannot get that by eating food alone, you must drink it as well. Because we are only allowed 2-3ounce meals you can see you cannot possibly get the protein your body requires by food you eat alone.

I am never to eat more than 4 ounces ever. That is what I knew going in and I am comfortable with. I can barely eat the 2-3oz right now. I have no hunger and am consistently losing. So how can I be upset.

I trust my team of Dr's, Nutritionists and Nurses as well as exercise specialists that follow me for the rest of my life. They have been doing this for quite some time and they know what the studies are showing and they also have there own patients to go by. I beleive this is why they are a Center for Excellence which was a huge factor in my decision to have this surgery.

In all fairness, not having a Protein "goal" doesnt mean you dont eat protein, when I've counted out of interest, I've averaged 60g. Many bandsters CAN eat enough in a day to get that. I obviously get enough - have good hair, nails, skin, have lost weight, plenty of energy, etc etc. I dont need to drink it at all. Sixty grams isnt that difficult to get for everyone.

Like Jachut, I don't "aim" for any Protein goals. I just eat a balanced diet. And when I have doubted myself, and counted Protein grams for a week, just to be sure, I found that I averaged somewhere around 65-70 grams a day.

I never lost hair, have nice strong nails, have plenty of get up and go, and lost weight just fine.

My doctor said 70 grams of Protein per day. When I was on Medifast Protein shakes four years ago, the minimum was 55. There is actually a formula based on your size and level of activity that I've been able to find online but the results were roughly in the 55 to 70 gram range for me.

I suspect some doctors set the goal higher than others with the idea that if we come up short, we'll still have enough.

jachut - thanks for the note. I really enjoy your perspective and approach to this new way of life. My dr just tells me to eat my Protein first and never has given me a goal.

He is much more concerned about 30 min of exercise per day - which is a challenge! I am doing the couch to 5K program and am hoping for it to become a habit like it has for you.

I was told that my goal should be about 65 grams a day, but I have found that , that is not enough, I used to make sure I had one Protein Drink a day, then found out that it wasn't enough and my hair was falling out, so now I drink two a day, one is my Breakfast and one is my snack, and it seems to be working well. Good Luck everyone.

I use a target of 1.25 grams per Kilogram of lean body weight.

I calculate lean body weight by assuming a body fat percentage of 15% at goal weight.

So:

225 X 85% = 191.25 / 2.2 = 86.9316 X 1.25 = 108.66 grams of Protein per day.

Adding a note, protien is roughly 7 grams per ounce of solid Protein food, so I can tell how many ounces of protien I need to eat by dividing the protien gram goal by 7.

Thus, 108.66 / 7 = 15.52 ounces of solid protien per day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
