How long did you wait?

Recommended Posts

So I finished all of the insurance pre-requisites and I had an appointment with my surgeon today. He says I am an excellent candidate for gastric bypass surgery based on all the consults I had- nutrition, psych. So my doc says he will fax in my paperwork to the insurance company wit a request for authorization. Once insurance approves, they will call me with a date.

I know it’s different for everyone and with Thanksgiving coming up it may delay things... but how long did you have to wait before you got authorized? I have Blue Cross Blue Shield
of Illinois.

I have Bluecross Blueshield and after their 6 month requirements, I waited 2 1/2 weeks and got the call yesterday that I was approved for surgery. Bluecross has taken 5 months to approve a claim for me for shots in my neck, so I was rather surprised it came so quick.

1 week after my 6th month visit insurance approved surgery. I was scheduled for surgery 2 weeks after that.

BCBS of TN. After the 6 month requirement, I was denied because my doctor's office did not send in the psych eval results! I had hoped to get surgery before the end of last year, but because of the denial and resubmission and then Christmas holidays, la di da di da, and then I got a bad cold, I finally got surgery on Feb 6 of this year. It worked out OK, however, as I had all this year to get as many appointments in as I could, since my deductible had been met.

I have BCBS of Illinois too.

I think your authorization should come soon.

I got my authorization after about six months going through all the rigamarole.

My surgery is on the 4th of Deember. It cam right after my psych eval was done.

Did your doctor make a tentative surgery date?

I hope he made it for this year so your deductible isn't too high.

Good luck!

So I got ahold of my insurance who told me today that my surgery is scheduled for Jan 29th, which is odd because the Doc’s office has not called me yet. No worries about the deductible, my insurance doesn’t have one, but I pay huge monthly premiums.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
