Pre-op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

This liquid diet is harder than I expected. Though, I would kill for Soups. I'm on shakes only for 2 weeks. But that ends this friday. Then I get soft foods! I can't even express how excited I am for cottage cheese and plain Greek yogurt and scrambled eggs...

Until friday I keep reminding myself that the liquid diet will be over soon. Soon......

You need to find a brand you like. I'm 4 weeks post op still on shakes with a little yoghurt and hummus if I need it and I'm happy..

Try some Unjury chicken broth it has 21 gma if Protein per serving. Get some sugar free flavored Syrup and pour it over crushed ice to chew.

I just did my second pre op liquid diet and am now on post op liquid due to revision.it truly sucks but is so important to stick with it. The purpose of the pre op is to shrink your liver. This makes it easier for the surgeon to get to your stomach and makes the surgery much safer for you.

Try to find things to do that will distract you from food.

You could also try the clear protein 2o to see if you can tolerate it better than the shakes. Drink as much sugar free liquids as you can to help you feel full. This is just a short period of time that you have to do this. The rewards will be well worth the effort.

Hang in there and good luck!

One more thing that helped me pre op was to freeze my shakes. I would eat them with a spoon and it made me feel as though I were eating.

I wish I had thought of that before! I learned how nice a warm protien shake can be, but it's a lot of work for "nice" so I usually just have it cold.the only beauty of a liquid diet is that I can be really lazy about food.

One more option is Fairlife Milk. Great option for those that can’t tolerate the shakes plus it is good for lactose intolerance

I agree. Nothing much good about it so we just have to soldier on and get through it

we were allowed to eat sugar free Jello. I ate it with abandon because it was the only thing I could have that somewhat resembled real food. I mean like I'd make a whole thing of it and eat half of it (or more!) in one sitting!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
