Menopause Pause?

Recommended Posts

So, this is a weird one.
Sometimes last year, after I turned 51, I moved into menopause (I thought), but post sleeve, in July, my monthly friend has returned on a regular basis, for the past three months. I was always regular and apparently still am. Anyone experienced anything similar? I don’t thing the initial cessation was weight related as I hadn’t had any real increase in some time. Just... strange.

I was already post-menopausal when I had weight loss surgery, but two thoughts:

1) I became REALLY irregular the last couple of years before menopause. I remember there were at least a couple of times when I thought it was over, but no - a few months later, I'd start up again

2) Weight loss surgery can screw with your hormones. Estrogen is stored in fat cells, and it's released during rapid weight loss (or so I've read...). So that might be what's going on, too...

I had my last period starting the day after I had my wls for my duodenal switch, and it lasted almost a week. That was the last period of my life. I was officially done and haven't had another one since. It's been two years. I think the surgery pushed my hormones over the edge.

Yor need to be a year without a period to be considered in menopause. My last year or so I thought i was done for good, then period returned. Finally, though they stopped for over a year.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
