My pre-op is tomorrow, 12/24- Christmas Eve! Surgeon is Dr.Chu at Kaiser Fremont, CA. My surgery will be 1/7 & I’m so psyched! I have my Vitamins, muscle milk, broths & am ready! I’m afraid of the first 1-2 weeks because I hear they are a bit difficult. Fingers crossed!!!!

Yeah, I plan on hibernating and working through my new program in private and with my uber tiny support team those first couple of weeks. I'm getting my surplus together as well and I'm ready. Nervous, scared, tired of this obesity roller coaster that has plagued my life. My anxiety is a little high, but I'm just nervous about the new life. Best of luck to you

This is my first post on the forum. My surgery day is 1/10/2020 at Stanford ValleyCare in Pleasanton, California. My surgeon is Dr. Estakhri and I will have a gastric sleeve. Pre-op visit will be on 01/02/2020.

I originally was at Stanford in Palo Alto but there office was so hard to communicate with and for 3 months we went round and round just trying to get a test submitted. I thought it wouldn’t be for another year and then my other doctor referred my to Dr. Estakhri and their office has been wonderful!

I’m trying to prepare and figure out what shakes and Protein I can have on hand. I can’t tolerate whey at all so that’s a challenge.

I had my pre-op appt. & things are all a go!!! I think I was afraid that I had not lost enough weight or my congestion would be a problem, but my surgeon was super supportive & positive. I only have to do an 8 hour fast, but I'm thinking of a 3-day fast before. She said that the more my stomach is empty, the easier it will be and I'll feel better. I did a 2 day modified fast before my pre-op & it made me feel less nervous about fasting and gave me confidence that it was doable.

I feel so much better about the experience & am getting my stuff ready for afterward.

Pre-op 12/24

Time for an update.

As I mentioned prior, my pre-op is scheduled for 27 Dec and surgery for 20 Jan. I've been working on my prerequisites and knocked out a biggie this morning. I've done the psych eval, the supervised weight loss program, and insurance is in place. Had a bit of trouble with the stress test (I do not do treadmills well.) so had to do a cardiac catherization. Did that last week and no blockage so the cardiac physician is thumbs up for surgery. Also had to do a EGD which I did this AM. The EGD showed a hiatal hernia and some Barrets. I knew about those so that was no surprise. My surgeon performed the EGD and said he wanted to be sure I understood the risks of a sleeve v. bypass wrt GERD but that he saw nothing that would prevent doing either.

Yes, I realize the bypass is superior to the sleeve for GERD but I much prefer the sleeve. The GERD has been well controlled for the past three years.

I have three things left.

I have to do a chest x-ray. (I've already told the physician that it will show a spot. That spot has been there for years so that shouldn't be a concern.)

I've got to do the pre-op.

The surgeon told me I need to lose 25 pounds at our initial consult. I've lost 15 and it's still over a month till surgery.

Just finished the pre-op consultation for my gastric sleeve. Everything good to go for surgery on 20 Jan. Have to be at the hospital at 0530 (oh, joy). Expect to stay till next day. Pre-op diet is HPMR thrice daily beginning 12 Jan. Only Clear Liquids on 19 Jan.

What is HPMR? I'm so excited for you? Are you isolating yourself to stay focused or are you still able to stay socially active and on task?

I go in on the 14th and I have yet to prepare at all for this. I will probably go shopping soon. ☺️ I’m not sure about which Soups etc to get. I only am on a liquid/cream diet for 5-6days depends on first appointment date. Then I’m on soft food. There is no purée stage. So that’s nice. And I heard the 5-6 days is mainly just trying to stay hydrated.

Time is going to fly by very quickly. I like to be prepared and then some, its also a good distraction for my nerves. I think I'm going to purchase a good pillow as well. I drink plenty of Water and I hope my love of water doesn't go away. I plan on being a good patient and resting. I like lounging around, this is my opportunity to get my rest as I heal.

High Protein Meal Replacement, a liquid meal prescribed for pre-op diets. Surgeon said specifically that it wasn't for post op, takes too long to digest. You can get it in the store here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
