Weight can lift after surgery?

What's the guideline for the amount of weight you can lift after surgery: how much and how long after?

I don't mean lifting weights as in weightlifting, but more like: "You cannot lift more than 5 pounds for a week post surgery."

My instructions were no more than 10 pounds for 8 weeks.

I think it was 10 pounds for a few weeks. I did pick up a 15 pound animal at week 2/3 and didn't feel it immediately but felt sore later that day.
