Not losing weight 17 days post op (Re-Sleeve)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I had gastric sleeve when I was 18 years old and lost over 100lbs but gained all the weight back since. I am now 24 and had a re-sleeve done on October 17th (17 days ago). I have been exercising daily and following my surgeons guidelines very strictly, including my Vitamins and hydration. I have only lost about 6lbs the last 17 days since surgery (256lb day if surgery, now fluctuating between 250 and 248). Everything I have read says people usually lose 5-15lbs their first month(which I did my first gastric sleeve) but I do not find much about re-sleeves. My nurse practitioner said it is normal not to lose weight the first month while you're healing because your body is retaining Water, but I simply do not believe that given my past experiences and what I read. Should I be worried my metabolism is completely messed up and I went through all of this again for nothing?

Give it a few months (3-6) of following Surgeons orders to the T and then reevaluate how you feel. You may just be eager or impatient to get back to where you once were but this is a different journey. Join us here for motivation 💙

This is not from my personal experience (I've never had a revision), but I've read the weight loss is a lot slower the second time around.

Ditto.

Sorry you're struggling, but average weight loss is 2-4lbs per week. Sounds like you are doing average? Hang in there.

I've not had a revised sleeve, but I revised from lap band to sleeve. Full disclosure, I went several years in between surgeries. BUT, I can say with experience that the weight loss was (and continues to be) slower to come off the 2nd time around.

Another case in point: a friend of mine who also converted from lap band to sleeve lost a total of 6 pounds in her first 2 months!

Be patient. Stay the course and it will happen.

I have only had RNY surgery once, but I have several metabolic challenges that result in me being a VERY SLOW LOSER no matter how 'on point' my eating/exercising/etc. is. I was very concerned about my very slow loss, especially as this is the only time I've had surgery.

In the first 2 weeks I was under 200 calories a day and the next 4+ weeks, I was under 400-450 a day so the 'math' did not add up. I was told the exact same thing by my doctor and his nutritionist - that after I had healed more, the weight loss would pick up SOME. It did, but I am still a slow loser.

HOWEVER, now I am over 3 months out and those 'small numbers' that dismayed me are all adding up. I think I read somewhere, and hopefully one of the veterans can correct me if I have this wrong, but when comparing amount of weight lost at about 2 years out, those who lost 'fast' and those who lost 'slow'...ended up with very comparable amounts of weight lost by that time (assuming all things are equal - like the slow losers didn't give up out of frustration - they continued to work and stick to their plan and exercised just as much if not more as others).

I was a slow loser and lost all of my excess weight... over 200 lbs. I just stuck to my program and rarely went off until i hit my goal

I havent heard of any of the horror stories of substantial regain. If you dont mind sharing what happened? Why did you have the initial success but the subsequent regain. What was the issue for you? Ive heard of people gaining back 10% but never horror stories of gaining the entire amount back.

I know you didn't direct this at me, but I've heard these stories. But then, I've been hanging out on these boards for a few years. It happens...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
