Reaction to incision glue?!

Recommended Posts

I just got my VSG on 10/23 and my incision sites were doing great until yesterday. It looks like my stomach broke out into hives but only around the sites. Their crazy itchy and I’ve been carefully using hydrocortisone cream around the sites.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips?

thanks!

My incisions were closed with staples and I had the same reaction. The Bariatric Fellow that saw me at my post op appointment before my bariatric surgeon freaked out! She said she had never seen such a reaction. A couple of days after they were removed and using hydrocortisone cream the rash was gone. Surgical staples are now on my allergy list. My ortho doc said they use cheap metal for those and allergies are not uncommon. He had to use a "zip line" to close my incision after my hip replacement 4 months ago. It's plastic and looks like a zipper. I also can't wear cheap earrings so it makes sense. By the way, the internal staples are a higher quality metal.

I didn't with my RNY but I DID with one of my plastic surgeries. Not sure if they used a different glue or tape or if it just took me awhile to develop a sensitivity to it. At any rate, call your clinic. My plastic surgeon put me on prednisone for a few days until I was healed enough for him to remove it - and then he removed it.

I react to the glue on the dressings, I have to make sure they use hypoallergenic ones.

Call your Dr and see if you can get a script for some strong antihistamines

Yes I actually had the rash on my sides and a big red circle around my incision but it was not infected. My surgeon had instructed me to carefully remove the glue at three weeks postop. But that was what my surgeon said I if I were you I would wait to see what yours tells you. Good luck

I had no idea I was allergic to the glue. Every incision was bright red. It took about two weeks of using hydrocortisone cream, before they got better.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
