How did you tell your little kids about WLS?

Recommended Posts

I have two kids between 6 and 13 and curious how to tell them about what's coming up. Would appreciate any advice.

With the 13 year old just be honest, as teens want basic facts. With the 6 year old let them know the doctor is going to fix your stomach so you start feeling better and healthier, but that you will be sore and tired for a few weeks. Answer questions for both as age appropriate.

I would just help them understand about healthy foods and fitness and stuff. Never too early to learn about food and fitness :)

Follow up:

Kids took it very well. My oldest had some thoughtful questions the day I explained it and the following day. My youngest started talking about having some fat around his tummy and that he wanted to be careful about what he ate too. I strongly emphasized that our bodies do need some amount of fat to stay healthy and that his body is perfect right now, and we'll talk about it more as he continues to grow.

Be honest with what’s going on let them see what you’ll be required to do. The 13yo can become your helper to keep you on track. You will need the extra hugs and support.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
