I'd like to know how you guys feel about having desert like foods. There are really 2 schools of thought: either "everything is OK in moderation" or you abstain 100% because sugar is an addiction. I am 9 months out and I'm still craving sweets despite having stopped all deserts. I dont eat Protein Bars, no Cookies, pie, ice cream, frozen yogurt etc. I am wondering if there is any way I can put out the fire so to speak by allowing myself very small amounts of healthier sweets. I mean, this is for life right? I see a lot of Keto deserts online and I wonder who has been able to eat these in moderation and still keep losing.

I saw this recipe this morning and it looks amazing but I'm wondering if this is a slippery slope, or a gateway drug to eating real ice cream. I'd like to think I could handle it but who knows. Just FYI I do not dump at all.

Nobody ever got fat eating a cookie once in a while. They got fat eating the whole box. Gues you know which camp I am in :). I fully believe those that quit cold turkey are major relapse risk.

I ate substitutes sometimes (protein bars, Protein Cookies, protein chips, protein ice cream, Fiber candy, etc) and the real deals in extreme moderation. It has become very easy to find the subs almost everywhere now thanks to the Keto phenomenon so I stick to those if I need a dessert.

I have had a piece of sugar free candy here and there. I only ate 1 piece and since I haven't had real candy in over 8 months it tasted like the real thing to me. I have also had sugar free Jello or pudding with a tablespoon of whipped cream a few times a month. It was good and satisfied the sweet craving or actually probably a mental craving thinking I was missing out. I don't want to eat a ton of the fake stuff since it is processed with chemicals etc so I limit it. I have had literally a teaspoon of real ice cream a few times but I am too scared of feeling sick to eat more than that. Ideally I would like to have a tiny serving of the real think on special occasions but I am not tempted to try that now. For Thanksgiving and in the long term for special occasions I am planning on having a tiny sliver of pie, not 2 pieces etc.

Nutrition can still taste good and be long term sustainable.

Decide what school of thought works best for you. (strict or moderate) I was on the stricter side in weight loss phase. If I denied cravings, I just wanted them more. I found healthy options for sweet and salty. Many great bariatric recipes for deserts. I read food facts labels on products. I log recipes in MFP. If things fit in my calories/macros for the day, I lose consistently.

yeah I'd say this recipe is waaaaay out of my plan. I bought some plain Greek yogurt today which I will try to doctor up. Maybe fruit or Stevia.

This is real life.. I believe in everything in moderation. I love having a chobani flip yogurt almost daily for dessert if I have the calories to spare. I’m 6 weeks post op. I didn’t do this to deprive myself and not live my life. It’s ok to have something sweet, just not a huge amount like I would have done pre surgery.

No offense to those in the thread but there is a large group on this community thats in the "im never eating chocolate again" camp and for good reason it made them obese. My question is if your will power was really that strong why did you need the surgery if you had the ability to quit everything cold turkey? My will power stinks I was never going to be able to achieve results without surgery to use as a tool.

I am doing the sugar free Jello, yogurt, and Protein bars as a "sweet treat" for now. Eventually I will have a little treat, but it is far too soon for me right now.

There are many ways to answer that question. For one thing, to some people sugar really is an addiction in the exact same way drugs or alcohol is. I am one of those people. I couldnt go a day without sugar and pretty much after every meal I would crave sugar like crazy. I remember one terrible Christmas we made dozens of Cookies and I ate those damn cookies like they were crack for the next 3 weeks. I just kept thinking "this has to stop". So at that point I was definitely not able to moderate it.

Now, 9 months post surgery I have completely changed my life. I have changed my coping mechanisms, I havent had any deserts and I work out regularly. I am debating the idea of having tiny amounts of sweets. Have I changed enough? Have I come far enough to be able to moderate? I honestly dont know.

No doubt it’s a drug and highly addictive. For me it wasn’t the biggest issue Portion Control was which made the sleeve extremely effective for me. 9 months without sweets after going a lifetime addicted isn’t that long of a time. Maybe you have changed but you better hope your not a relapse risk because a relapse incident is worse than moderation. I just have s very different view on it. I’ve cut way back but too stubborn to give it up entirely. Both camps think their way is right but reality is it’s probsbly just right for them.

I was a Type 2 diabetic who couldn't stop eating sugar. I ate donuts and junk food every day, knowing full well my blood sugar count was climbing, even with medication. I chose RNY because I *had* to give up sugar unless I wanted to risk dumping, which has been described as a near-death experience.

Now I can look at sugary products and maybe feel a little urge to taste them again, but I now have the willpower to not do so.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
