6 days post op VSG

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Doing well on day six but figured I’d post an update...

Only the largest incision is sore at this point and mainly just when I go to lie down or bend or twist. If I am still/lying down no pain at all.

I’m down 19.4 lbs since pre op diet began. Yeah!

Full liquid stage is better than clear but it does fill you up a lot faster. I can barely get 4 Oz in of my Protein Drink and that is sipping slowly. I also feel quite full after that amount. I’ve also learned the hard way that if I am going to add unflavored Protein to my strained cream Soup, I should not reheat in microwave. Nasty chunks. Blech

The hardest part for me is the fatigue I am experiencing. I have so little energy. For two days I have wanted to go to the store just to escape the house and I haven’t made it there yet. I’ve gotten as far as showering each day but today is the first day I actually blow dryed my hair. Lol

When does the energy come back? I’m 55 so maybe that is why I’m so pooped? Or is everyone like this? I had surgery on 10/15/19.

I hope everyone is doing well!

Glad things are going well after surgery. You are still healing. Give yourself some time. Your energy will come back.

Thanks! I am counting on that and I am so thankful that I am off from work for a couple of weeks so I can regain that energy.

After I posted that message I think I need to decrease my amount of food to less than 4 Oz if it contains Protein. I’m feeling a bit bloated and full right now.

Hi pssk,

We had surgery the same day and I'm happy to hear you're doing well. My understanding is that a lack of energy is fairly common after surgery regardless of age; you'll have your mojo back -- and more! -- soon enough.

My surgery was uneventful, and I'm very fortunate to be feeling well, too. Able to get in all clear fluids, Water, and supplements, though it takes 15 hours to do it by taking the tiniest sips all day long. I walked 1.5km yesterday and today, but at a pace of someone with a walker 🙃 Down 4.2kg since Tuesday, which keeps blowing me away when I think of how much effort it took to lose this much weight before surgery.

All the very best to you for your continued recovery!

That is wonderful that you have lost that much! I dropped 14.5 on two week pre op (which included a bowel prep-yikes) and approx 5 more since then.

I will be following your journey, surgery twin! 😀

I'm new on here, and also had surgery on 10/15, but still on clear liquid diet...I can't wait to get to the next phase this week. I also feel fatigued about middle of the day....I was told that was normal at this point.

I am lucky that I am on full liquids now because the clear liquid was pretty rough for me.

I never thought strained cream of chicken Soup could taste so good!

We got this!!!

I think it will take a while for your body to adjust to the new stomach etc

I was having a real hard time getting in my 4 oz of Protein Shake as well. My nutritionist told me "I don't have to clean my plate". Just get it in our the course of a day. I'm in Phase 4 now, where we are starting to reintroduce most foods, still not solids, but soft foods. I still have trouble with getting all my Water in as well. especially now, as my diet is not all liquid.

As far as the energy levels go, did you start Vitamins as soon as you got home? If not, check with your doc. You may be deficient and need a blood test to figure out just what you need.

The first week after surgery I weirdly had loads of energy and was easily walking 2 km/1.25mi per evening, but over the last two days I'm observing some fatigue by mid-day. This is inevitable when you're taking in under 400kcal per day but still have a large body to move through space. I prefer walking at night when it's quiet and peaceful, but think I'll have to switch to mornings for the foreseeable future because I have more energy then. I intend to slowly work my way back up to 15,000 steps per day over the next little while, energy levels permitting.

Will remain on a full liquid diet for the next couple weeks, but can't say I'm actually enjoying anything, even the cream Soups. I have to eat Protein, so I am eating it. As far as I can determine, my sense of taste and smell remain unaltered, but I neither like nor dislike any of the full liquid flavours. It's gradually getting easier to get in 8 cups of Water per day.

I'm following my two fellow Oct 15 sleever twins here 😊😊, and hope we all adjust easily and quickly without issue as the days go by and different foods are introduced.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
