I am 27 and banded on 11/01. I am SO glad I did this sooner rather than later. I don't want to be fat even one minute longer than necessary. I also heard comments like "are you sure you can't do it on your own?". If I could do it on my own I would have never had surgery. My surgeon told me that having gastric banding or bypass does not mean you are a failure. He also said that diets don't work for 98% of people. think yo-yo dieting made me much fatter than I would have been had I never dieted.

starryeyed

Unfortunately, I'd have to say that the worst reactions that I've experienced from other people were from fellow fat folks. Don't get me wrong, I've had a couple of so-so reactions from skinny people, but the truly negative ones have been from fat people. If you are on the "smaller" side for WLS, it's not uncommon. Heck, during the few actual support groups that I went to, I got several comments from people that had already had the surgery, telling me that I was "too small for surgery." That irritated me, mainly because while I may not have been as heavy as they were when they had surgery (most of them were RNY patients), I was still fat and I qualified for insurance to cover it.

I am 29. Physically the recovery was a little longer than I anticipated. I would say it wasn't until the second week that I felt better, but this is a very individual thing. I think what hurt me the most was my anxiety. I am a very anxious person, and I would freak out with any new sensation. Eventually you start to learn the different cues your body gives you. I am in therapy now and I think it is helping me tremendously. I also do a self-help program that has helped me tremendously. I think doctors do a good job of getting you ready for the physical changes, but not a lot of them are good at telling you what to expect mentally. food was my comfort when I was happy, sad, you name it. The band makes you learn that food is no longer a comfort thing, it's a survival thing. And for me that was a rude awakening. Definitely be prepared physically and emotionally. To be 100% honest the first few weeks, I was like "What I have done!" But once I saw the weight loss, and I stopped letting my negative thoughts rule, and started being positive it helped me tremendously. Also one very important tip, they mention it on other posts is "head hunger". Know when your full, and know when you just want to keep eating because you "think" your hungry. That has helped me tremendously. So that has been my experience with the band. So far so good. I am down about 30lbs. in 6 weeks! Awesome! I hear your 30's are the best times of your life. I am starting to think they are right. :whoo:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
