Left shoulder pain after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Immediately after my surgery (like as soon as I woke up), I had sharp, intense pain in my left shoulder. This pain continued through the time in the hospital. Everyone said it was gas pain. It would move up near my neck and back to my shoulder. And it came and went in bursts.

After leaving the hospital it was extremely reduced to just a small, occasional discomfort. However, it’s been three weeks and I still get it a few times a day.

My doctor said this type of pain is associated with the drain that was placed while in the hospital and seemed not concerned. He said it was only important to acknowledge if it was happening after eating, as that could be a sight of a leak, but I only really feel it in the morning after laying down all night, or after a nap.

Now im noticing sometime it does twinge a bit after eating, but it’s both short lived and not very intense.

Im concerned of course of a leak, but I have no other signs of leak. No rapid heart beat. No fever, sweating or other discomfort of any kind. In fact, I feel great. It’s bothersome because three weeks post surgery I’m still getting this annoying pain. Could it be a leak? Has anyone else experienced this?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
