Another set back...

Recommended Posts

Starting to get frustrated with the set backs with my hospitals program requirements. I know it is for the best but between having tests and appointments be postponed and getting more required appointments added I just want to get this done. I finished my last dietary appointment today (the dieticians office cancelled on me once which put me off schedule and I had to start over) and I have what will hopefully be my last psych visit next week (the doctor who does the psych evals never gives the green light on the first visit but I didn’t know this going in to it) so I thought I was finally good to go. But then I got further results of my sleep study they required and they changed me from mild sleep apnea to moderate so now I need to get a cpap and have 4 weeks documented use before I can do my first surgical appointment. It’s extremely discouraging that they make you do every last bit before you can even get your first appointment with the surgery team. I just want to get that process started as I was diagnosed with IIH already had to have a stent in, I am still losing my eyesight, and I want to try this before going through with the shunt. I have been working this for over a year and haven’t cancelled one of my own appointments all the set backs have been a perfect storm that the clinics have had to cancel or postpone things. I just want this done before the end of the year when my insurance is going to both renew the deductible and change providers and have new rules to meet. I met my out of pocket maximum this year. I am ready and just needed a place to vent.

Welcome to the forum and the IIH club 😌

Same! I started my application process in March 2018 and had my surgery in April 2019. I was probably their most annoying patient lol! I did everything they said right away and when it was their turn to process things they would take FOREVER so I would keep calling to ask if there were any updates and they wouldn't say anything but I knew they were extremely annoyed. Anyway, I was beginning to lose hope when all of a sudden they were like okay everything looks good and we'll call you to schedule a date! It happened all of a sudden so stay hopeful! It'll happen eventually! Good luck! ❤️

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
