DO YOU THINK THE SURGERY WAS WORTH IT?

Recommended Posts

I had a horrible experience with the gastric sleeve and the dr. whom performed the surgery, however that's neither here nor there at this point. I nearly died, have been fighting every since. I healed with extreme issues, had to have them corrected and had to start all over at stage 1. Now I am so unhappy because I cant eat more than 3 tiny bites of anything and stomach hurts with even Water. I have had dilatation treatments which are working wonders. I often get asked was it worth it because of how much weight I have lost. I have been going thru too much to actually enjoy my weight loss so Im asking others do they regret it or think it was worth it. I started out at 475lbs, I am currently 198lbs and losing 4-8lbs every week and a half. I am now on more meds than I was before the surgery. I lost soo much weight that my heart has not slowed down at all so they had to slow my heart down with meds.

Welcom to the site

I am so sorry you have experience complications. Know that you are not alone. I can understand why you feel this was not worth it.

Some of us have no complications and others unfortunately have them. I fall in the category of I don’t regret this. I bounced back from surgery and maintain years out. I have compassion for anyone that experienced what you are going through.

Here is a link. There is a search button at the top of the forum. You can type the topic that you are looking for. I typed complications.

I am so sorry that you're experiencing such difficulties. I hope it all gets better soon.

Even with complications (nowhere near as bad as yours), I'd do this again in a heartbeat. 50 years' worth of loss/regain was enough to tell me that I was never going to get to a normal weight on my own.

OMG you've been through the ringer. I can only imagine what you've been dealing with.

when was your surgery? Who is helping/treating you now.

you've lost a lot of weight, but you are too sick to enjoy your weight loss. Eating only small

spoonfuls, yet continuing to lose too much weight the wrong way.

i have had no complications over the past 7+ years - i am so sorry for your problems

Venting is good and therapeutic - vent away

sending you healing thoughts❤️

get well soon

good luck

I don't regret it for a minute, but then the only complication I had was a stricture - which is an easy fix. Sorry you're going through that!

Wow! So sorry, I just read this.

I'm so sad you've had this experience. I can totally understand your perspective given your set of circumstances!!! Bless you. I just pray that your current docs are helping you and that you get to heal!!! ((hugs))

I would, for myself, do the surgery 10 times over again for the way I feel right now- but I haven't had the complications you have endured, either.

I am so sorry you have had it so rough! :(

I hope as time goes on things will settle down health wise for you and become much, much easier.

Wishing health and happiness for you... 💙

I regretted it right after because of all the pain and I literally did not think i would mourn food but I did. It was the Spring and I couldn’t enjoy food and never realized how much of an impact food had on my social life. Needless to say as time went on , it did get better. I had only minor complication of an ulcer and for the most part over the last 5 years it has been ok although having doctors keep you on a Vitamin regimen so that you your not anemic has been a challenge. Over the last year I noticed I was having issues with food getting stuck and throwing up and finally went in for an EGD, turns out I had a hiatel hernia and needed a partial gastrectomy . Had that on 9/19 and I was put on a clear liquid diet for 2 weeks. I am so sorry for what you have been going though and for those of you whom had severe complications , I think sometimes it’s all about the surgeon , the support staff , and the follow up the helps us recover. There are also genetic and hereditary factors that are beyond our control. I would so do it again . I started out 5 years ago at 298. I have been maintaining 178 -182 for 2 years . Because of the recent liquid diet, I’m at 170 . Good luck and prayers for everyone

For me it was absolutely worth it. But then, I am having great success with no complications. Hang in there. Hopefully when your weight loss starts to slow down, your body will start to recover.

Hello everyone!!!

I'm pleasantly surprised at all the love you all have shown me. I decided to give an update since im still receiving massive love.

Turns out I not only received a below standards of care surgery, I had an underlying issue that I wouldn't have known about without the weight loss. It would have eventually killed me had I not been having such pain. No, not appendicitis.

I had to have dilatations 4x by a wonderful dr that I have since fallen head over heels for!!! He single handedly guided me in the right direction while my mother nursed me back to life. I was in icu completely grey, devoid of color.

I actually had an mri/ ultra sound done with and without contrast that revealed the main culprit of my pain. I had a 6hr major surgery on Nov8 and I return to work this Thursday, needless to say, I feel fantastic aside the long flabby breasts, i'm not doing anymore surgeries im done.

I can eat everything forbidden period, my current bariatric dr is #1 in this area and has erased all of what the previous dr whom performed the surgery on me has said about what to eat and not to eat. Now it's not "you can't eat it", but more of what "you should and shouldn't eat".

Im constantly hungry which i'm ok with because i'm eating super fancy healthy foods that i'm preparing from a cook book my mother bought me. Since I cook for us both she's lost 24lbs in a month and a half. Im down from 475lbs to holding at 171lbs,2wks prior i climbed up to 179, but back at 171lbs. I'm doing extremely well now. I thank all of you for your well wishes and positive light!!❤❤❤

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
