How long till you were pain free

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Got sleeved last Thursday on the 19th of September. Im in a good amount of pain still. I’m wondering when you became pain free after surgery. It’s been 6 days and I’m still pretty much bed ridden. I do get up and walk often and I go up and down stairs a few times a day but im in pain. About one hour before my pain meds are due I know it. I can feel it. I’m on Percocet and tylenol.

When did you stop feeling pain after surgery?

Sorry that you are still in pain. I seem to remember about 4 days, then about a week before I could sleep on my side.

Had surgery Monday 9/23. A lot more painful than expected. Trying to walk as much as possible but getting in & out of bed is excruciating

Had my sleeve yesterday 9/24. Very little pain. My throat hurts more from the intubation.

It is more pain than I expected too. And lasting longer. Tomorrow will be one week. I was hoping to be more comfortable by now but it does get better every day. Mornings seem to be the hardest

Im in a bit of a conundrum when it comes to pain meds. I don’t want to take the PERCOCET because it makes me so sleepy that I spend all day in bed. I’ve been swapping it with liquid Tylenol but I worry about my liver as it’s already on overdrive from the surgery. I don’t want to cause damage.

I did get a post surgery binder. That has done wonders for the pain although it does get a bit uncomfortable by the end of the day. I take it off to sleep. For some reason it seems to irritate my belly button incision a bit. But the comfort it provides outweighs the small discomforts. I do recommend it to everyone.

A warning to Winchell. I’ve been in more pain after I left the hospital than while there. It’s because the pain meds are not as consistent or as good as they were in the hospital. Also I think we are just more sore a few days later. I do hope that’s not your case, but don’t be surprised.

I hope everyone feels better quickly.

Thanks so much for feedback. What is binder?

It’s like a corset you wear around your waist. It’s not tight tight like to shape your waist, but firm like those belts guys use for heavy lifting. It supports your tummy and keeps it from jiggling around which causes pain. It’s very comfortable and reduces pain significantly. I got mine from Amazon a couple of days after surgery and it’s helped a lot. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/Everyday-Medical-Abdominal-Binder-Surgery/dp/B07G4N752D

I highly recommend. I got the suggestion from someone else here on Bariatric Pal.

Left hospital last night. Ribs are very sore but doing okay. Thanks for the warning. I did notice that standing up straight today is a lot harder than in the hospital.

Severe pain, 3 days. Pain free at a week with occasional soreness. I had gastric bypass and it was by far the easiest surgery I've had.

Disclaimer:
I had a completely complication-free surgery and recovery.

Within 3 hours of surgery, my team took me off of all pain meds except for plain Tylenol in my IV.
The most significant “pain” I had was a feeling as if I had been punched repeatedly in the solar plexus and it hurt every time I tried to swallow liquid. Which sucked bc you have to drink 68 ounces liquid before they let you out.
I slammed 2 ounces per hour (yes it hurt, but I had to do it regardless) and then finally got to where I was drinking 4-6 ounces/hour as time was running out.
Again, it hurt, but I knew I’d hurt worse without it.
Luckily I have a cast-iron stomach (sleeve now) and didn’t puke once.

The chronic pain in the solar plexus lasted about 2 weeks, but the funny thing is that even though I’m close to 8 months PO, I can still duplicate that pain if I eat too fast, eat too much, or swallow too big a bite of food.
I welcome that pain though, because it acts as a reminder to slow down

The first 2 weeks just really stink, but they’re totally worth it

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
