October Surgery Roll Call

Recommended Posts

i just had the sleeve October 9th. I was on a liquid diet 5 days before and then clear liquid two days before. This first week home I was on Clear Liquids again. At post op visit yesterday I have to be on liquids (no pudding, no yogurt no applesauce, no creamed Soups, no yogurtetc) for yet another three weeks. Basically its Protein Shakes, bouillion, Water and crystal light and sugar free popsicles. Stage three after will be the first real "food" for me (pureed) November 8.. I am amazed when I read all these patient who are eating soft food after week one and seem to do fine. That will be a total of SIX weeks on liquids...not easy. My Dr. seems to be in the minority on this issue, but I am following it to the letter. Good luck as you continue your journey. You are correct, we are all different how we heal and handle this!

I had the sleeve but I'm nervous to start puree after reading your post. I had surgery monday and have been on just liquids and will be for 2 weeks. Puree starts week 3 for me. If you don't mind me asking what exactly happened when you started puree???

sure.....3 days ago exactly two weeks out (surgury Oct 1) I started having stomach cramps.....so bad and unusual. I do have to say that my daily bms were also like supersoft as well....my cramps were so bad I asked hubby to take me to the ER. I thought I was dying (this was Monday night of this week) they did all kinds of test and found a bowel obstruction where the intestine was sewed to the new "pouch" I was not allowed to eat or drink for 3 days while they figured this out. I was transferred by ambulance to my surgeons hosptial...he saw me briefly than released me to liquids only. No one is able to say exactly what happened but they did all kinds of xrays and images of my drinking while being exrayed, etc....they say everything is working normal....but being in the hospital was not fun. Home yesterday and back on liquids per doctors orders. I also followed purees to a "T" I think you will be fine @Linda72 as you had the sleeve. And I started puree on week 2 and you are on week 3. Maybe my insides hadn't healed? I've read that 3% of bypass patients get bowel obstructions and sooo lucky me...... I don't think that happens with sleevers. The bypass "side effects" are a bit more complex due to your guts being re-routed. Right now I wish I had gotten the sleeve like I originally asked for.....I did let myself get talked into the bypass but I 100% own that decision. just feeling down but I do hope that in a few months this will all be behind me.

Wooooow I literally had to gasp after reading that. I'm so sorry to hear all that you have been going through. To be completely honest I cant believe how some on here are eating some type of solid food a week after surgery. Even when I start puree the only thing I'm adding is Cottage cheese, ricotta cheese & Greek yogurt other then that still liquid. I cant even have an egg till 2 weeks of puree. I'm doing so well with my Water, tea, broth, Jello & ice pops that I couldn't wait to start puree and then I saw your post and freaked out. Lol. I'm sure everything will work itself out God willing please keep me updated on your progress. Stay well🙏🏻

Congratulations. I had mine on the 14th and I feel great as well. Had slight gas pan the Monday night but listened to my dr & staff and walked continuously from the moment I got my room and gas discomfort subsided. I'm not feeling much discomfort with restriction either. Been able to get my liquids down with no issues. I only pray it goes as well with phase 2 puree stage. Well good luck and may your journey continue on the same path. 😁

Thank you Linda72 , congratulations to you as well . I'm also worried about the purées stage . The walking really has helped , I really do not even fell like I've had surgery . I hope it continues to go well for the both of us .

You are doing great @Nonnaof4 getting your Protein in! I'm a slow loser myself.....I had a little set back and ended up in the hospital for a few days. ER said I have a partial obstructed bowl but surgeon says that's normal for a bypass patient. They did a bunch of xrays (arghhh) and said my GI tract was okay...just inflamed where they made the intestine/pouch connection. Normal for 2 weeks Post op... Guess I had some bad Constipation ?? Drink your Water and take your colace daily folks!

Otherwise I'm good now just tired a lot, not from lack of sleep lack of energy.

Thank you @Panda333. I was worried about the Protein at first. Today I was advanced to the pureed stage diet for the next 4 weeks. Definitely had to add some mirlax to my twice daily colace LOL. I've never been looking forward to a BM so much in my life 😂😂

Congratulations! I have been amazed as well reading how quickly some begin soft foods. I have my sleeve on the 22nd,and I will also be following the stages that my Dr has given me to the T. My Doc might be a minority on stage 1 issue as well😉

Glad you're doing better. I can see where constipation can be an issue between the lack of food plus all the extra meds.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
