Very Frequent Hiccups

Recommended Posts

I had RNY Gastric Bypass on the 19th of Aug. I keep getting the hiccups, Fri it was almost every hour, Sat I'd get a couple hour break then get them twice in an hour and on and on.

I get them even when I haven't eaten and even in the middle of the night so I know they are not from eating too fast. Getting them so often is placing limits on what I can eat because of the air I inevitably swallow making me feel like I am stuffed to the max.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? Any tips on how to avoid them? It is driving me insane.

I had the sleeve and seem to get them when I eat or drink too fast however I remember the discharge nurse telling me if you have excessive hiccups make an appt with the surgeon as sometimes it's the sign of a leak. I would just check it out for piece of mind

I get random hiccups that come out of nowhere too. Usually it's only 3 or 4 in a row but they're still obnoxious. I had my surgery on the 28th and they're starting to go down in frequency so I'm happy about that.

I am experiencing this a little bit. For me, a couple times a day I have a couple hiccoughs then I let out a little burp and they stop. So... seems to be gas related for me. I am day four after surgery.

I get them when I get too much air from drinking too fast or using a straw or something.

After my gastric sleeve, I got frequent and painful hiccups from about post-op day 7 to 15, then they went away.

I still get them. I'm not sure there is a rhyme or reason, because I get them even when I don't eat.

And mine seem now always to immediately precede EMESIS. so instead of a minor nuisance it's an "OMG'--- please--- NOT NOW!"

I called my nurse about it this morning. Based on the no rhyme or reason but also another symptom I never mentioned she thinks for me it is reflux related. So they want me to start taking my carafate again (pre surg was carafate and prilosec) in addition to the pepcid they prescribed. She also wants me to go back to a liquid diet for a couple of days to rest my esophagus. Bummed about the liquids again...but hoping this will work.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
