Blood sugars high after surgery

Recommended Posts

Had surgery yesterday morning and my blood sugars are very high. I don't get it. They havent been this high in months and now after surgery they are bad again. Nurse said could be due to stress from the pain as I have a lot of pain or from some of the medications they have been giving me. Has this happened to anyone else? I really was hoping my diabetes would get better as soon as I had my surgery.

Nothing happens overnight. Give your body time to heal. Hope your blood sugars go down soon.

Likely they gave you glucose in your iv fluids?

I was given insulin in the hospital. at 6 months post-op I still have to take a bit of meds still. Hopefully it will get better with weightloss.

They gave me insulin in the hospital after surgery. Never had to take it before as I was pre-diabetic, but apparently my sugar was high enough they felt it was needed. After a day or two they didn't have to continue that as my levels dropped off.

As i was supposed to be off metformin for the surgery, I stayed off of it afterwards. I setup an appt with my GP to have my blood tested and see if it could be permanently removed from my med list.

It was. No longer on the med.

As others say, hang in there... focus on resting and doing your breathing exercise, going to the bathroom when needed, and walking when able.

What do your health professionals say about it?

Just FYI, it's a fairly normal thing. The IV fluids they have you on help raise blood sugar.

I was on metformin pre-op but NEVER had blood sugar tested at higher than 105 pre-op.

Post op? ~160+, and it stayed like that for about ~24 hours. Then dropped to it's normal 95-105.

Now it's very steady at ~80.

Yes, the IV fluids may have contributed to higher blood sugars but also the stress of surgery will make it temporarily rise. As a nurse monitoring diabetic hospital patient's blood sugars was a daily routine because illness and injury causes the body to react by elevating blood sugar. Depending on the level of illness or trauma it can go out of control, though recent studies show the higher blood sugar levels may help the body heal - when overly controlled patients sometimes developed heart problems so it may be a necessary part of the body's healing/defense process. Not to worry.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
