Revise Sleeve to Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hello Sleevers, has anyone revised their sleeve to a bypass surgery? Can you explain how it went and how was the journey?

I am seriously considering this due to a major increase in reflux after my sleeve. I went from taking a prilosec once in a while or when needed (before sleeve) to 2 doses everyday (post surgery) to stay reflux free. I feel I would had been a good bypass candidate due to my Gerd history something my surgeon did not inform me of nor did I know until further investigating. The bypass surgery disables gastric juices from flowing back up instantly relieving the need for PPI. I am overall satisfied with the sleeve however I am not too thrilled about the amount of PPI medication I now have to take due to its longterm side effects.

hey, sorry you are so uncomfortable with the reflux and yeah why did they not say about it and suggest a bypass initially? I had a sleeve on Aug 12th then a bypass on 21st due to a volvulus forming, so altho i have had it all done, it happened in a morphine cloud of agony. Good luck :)

I was sleeved in Feb. 2018, revised to RnY Oct. 2018 for reflux. I was taking the max dose of prescription omeprazole twice a day plus Tums, as needed. Still woke up sometimes with acid in my nose. I had not had reflux prior to the sleeve surgery. The RnY did completely resolve the GERD issue, but I miss the restriction I had with my sleeve. It was really tight, which I considered a good thing. I do have restriction with the RnY, but nowhere near as much. Regardless, I am happy I had the revision before I destroyed my esophagus and teeth.

Hi Orchid thanks for your feed back. I always thought bypass was stronger than the sleeve and it was more effective with longterm weight-loss. Its good to know it instantly resolved your reflux issues though. Do you take nsaids with the RnY? I have my 1 year follow up next month with my surgeon to talk about these things.

My surgeon said that an RnY on a "virgin" stomach is more restrictive than on a revision. However, adding the malabsorption is what would improve weight loss. This was why I chose the sleeve initially. I really didn't want to deal with malabsorption issues, but you gotta take it as it comes.

Still no nsaids, though. Good luck with your surgeon appointment. Let us know how it goes.

I had also read that the sleeve was more restrictive then the RNY, which was one of the bigger reasons I switched to sleeve, but the acid issues are still daily for me 2 years out. The meds do keep me from waking up choking on acid, which is good as you can imagine. Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
