Gained Weight Right After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Tmrrw makes 1 week postop for me. I gained 4.2lbs while being in the hospital for surgery. I’m down those extra pounds & 2.6lbs on top of that. I know that the extra weight came from IV & probably also Water retention. I woke up out of anesthesia burping & the following day, started to pass gas. I was finally able to poop this morning with the help of milk of magnesia. I’m able to get down 2 Protein Shakes a day, crystal light & other fluids. Can’t wait til I see the true weight come off. I’m big on taking measurements & celebrating NSVs, but it was a shocker to see the weight gain after surgery.

You can keep up with my journey on IG @CurlyGirl_GetsFit

I'm glad you're so practical and not panicky about this. You're correct, the weight was just IV fluids and swelling. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and to see the scale moving more quickly soon!

Good morning Curlygirl, I am also a curly girl, do you follow that method? Anyway, I know that surgery adds those Water pounds on, but luckily it comes off quickly! Best of luck on your Journey!

Good Morning, I am glad you are being practical as well. The more we research and learn the easier the journey is. It by no means is easy but you will come to know what to expect and how to handle it as the days go by and not freak out when something does happen. Being informed is the best way to be! Congrats and welcome to the losers bench!

Thank you! I appreciate it. Being that it was my first surgery & first time having an IV, I didn’t know about the weight gain, nor was I informed about it so it took me by surprise lol.

Its a learning process. I am still learning things at 10 months out and i myself did a lot of research. Thankfully nothing has taken me by surprise yet. Read the boards here.. even if they dont pertain to you. You will learn what others are going through, and how they handled or dealt with the situation, so when it comes about.. you will know what may or may not work and be able to push through it. I just learned last night that Larry and Lennys Complete Protein Cookies are 2 servings for the 1 Cookie.. I dont eat them, I like Quest and LL is too high in sugar for me LOL.. But i had always wanted to try them.. now.. not a chance and no desire anymore to even try a nibble LOL.

Quite normal! I was up 5 pounds when I got home from the hospital. Day 12 now and I am steadily losing. 8 pounds down from my pre-op weight.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
